Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of full-time, paid legal and related secretarial experience, or an equivalent combination of acceptable training and experience.
  • Knowledge of the form and content of legal forms and documents.
  • Knowledge of legal terminology, spelling, and basic legal research.
  • Knowledge of business English, arithmetic, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic personal computer equipment and Microsoft Office functions.
  • Knowledge of confidentiality of attorney-client communication and attorney work product.
  • Knowledge of organizational practices.
  • Ability to type from rough draft or clear copy.
  • Ability to independently prepare and assemble entire briefs and other legal documents.
  • Ability to secure and copy docket entries.
  • Ability to use case reports, opinions, decisions, docket entries, and texts to copy pertinent material for preparing briefs and pleadings.
  • Ability to use a computer and software effectively.
  • Ability to perform moderately varied arithmetic computations and tabulations accurately with reasonable speed.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral directions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Responsibilities
  • Provide administrative and clerical support for the assigned attorney practice area, including preparing briefs, pleadings, and other documents.
  • Prepare and maintain an electronic case-management docket of matters.
  • Set up and maintain legal case files.
  • Check the status of cases online or through personal contact.
  • Notify interested parties of the time and place of conferences, meetings, and travel.
  • File record papers electronically in state and federal courts.
  • Coordinate and communicate with clients.
  • Welcome guests and callers in person or by telephone, and answer or direct inquiries.
  • Maintain the attorney calendar by planning and scheduling appointments.
  • Answer routine telephone inquiries.
  • Open and distribute mail.
  • Compose replies to routine correspondence.
  • Use computers for word processing, email, and other work-related functions.
  • Sort, maintain, and purge correspondence and other file materials.
  • Operate postage, copying, and fax machines.
  • Help maintain office supplies and equipment and sort mail.
