Requirements
  • An undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in mechanical engineering or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Strong experience with computer-aided design software, ideally SolidWorks, for design and simulation.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, assembling and testing prototype instruments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of manufacturing methods and material selection, including metals, polymers and ceramics.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and deliver high-quality outcomes within agreed timeframes.
  • Excellent technical communication skills in English at C1 level.
Responsibilities
  • Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies for advanced scientific instrumentation.
  • Analyse the mechanical performance of designed components and assemblies using modelling and simulation tools to ensure technical requirements are met.
  • Lead mechanical design reviews with researchers and project stakeholders to ensure technical feasibility and alignment with project objectives.
  • Coordinate the manufacture of mechanical components with the Scientific Instrument Workshops and external suppliers.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with external suppliers to support the timely procurement of specialty components and engineering solutions.
  • Test completed components and assemblies for compliance with design specifications, quality standards and performance requirements.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to integrate mechanical and electrical components into completed scientific instruments.
  • Deliver completed assemblies and provide technical support throughout testing, implementation and continuous improvement activities.
  • Build productive relationships across multidisciplinary teams and contribute to shared scientific and engineering objectives.
  • Communicate complex technical information effectively to researchers, engineers, workshop staff and other stakeholders.
  • Exercise professional judgement, work with a high degree of autonomy and take responsibility for delivering high-quality outcomes.
  • Apply critical thinking to complex technical challenges, evaluate alternative solutions and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Respond to changing project requirements and priorities, learn new technologies, and develop knowledge and skills to support evolving project needs.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with product data management.
  • Experience in precision mechanisms or another field of mechanical design.
  • Hands-on experience manufacturing parts using conventional machining techniques such as milling and turning, and digital manufacturing technologies such as 3D printing and laser cutting.
  • Knowledge of analytical or simulation tools for assessing fluid flow and heat transfer in complex assemblies.
  • Experience managing computer-aided design environments and supporting colleagues in applying engineering design best practices.
  • Strong technical communication skills in German at B2 level.

Boehringer Ingelheim Stiftung funds EMBL €7M

Boehringer Ingelheim Stiftung has committed €7 million to support the EMBL Imaging Centre in Heidelberg, enhancing its development of cutting-edge imaging technologies. This is the second funding round from BIS, following an initial €5 million in 2017. The funding will help recruit and maintain highly qualified staff, furthering the centre's role as a leading international hub for advanced microscopy technologies and training, having supported over 290 projects from 27 countries since mid-2021.
