Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required, with additional qualifying work experience substitutable for up to four years of education.
  • Three years of greenhouse production experience are required.
  • One year of experience leading or supervising professional staff is required.
  • Knowledge of greenhouse production is required.
  • Oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products is required.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws is required.
  • Ability to multitask while demonstrating commitment to customer service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community is required.
  • A Maryland Pesticide Applicator License is required or must be obtained within six months of the initial hiring date.
  • Ability to work irregular schedules, including weekends, holidays, and catastrophic weather conditions, is required.
  • Ability to perform some lifting, work in wet or humid conditions, handle hazardous materials safely, and wear personal protective clothing is required.
  • Successful completion of applicable Criminal History Record and University of Maryland background checks is required.
  • Proof of employment eligibility and work authorization in the United States must be provided within the timeframe required by federal immigration law.
Responsibilities
  • Manage all greenhouse and growth chamber operations, including plant care and space management.
  • Assign and allocate greenhouse bench space, growth chamber space, exterior screen houses, cold frame areas, and facility storage areas.
  • Implement and conduct plant management practices involving water, fertilizer, and pest control.
  • Set, monitor, troubleshoot, replace, and repair environmental controls and Priva equipment.
  • Ensure Worker Protection Standard compliance and training for all greenhouse users.
  • Work with the Plant Sciences and Landscape Architecture Facilities Manager to resolve maintenance needs.
  • Monitor space usage and assign monthly bench charges.
  • Manage and enforce cleanliness and organization of common greenhouse areas.
  • Supervise and train greenhouse employees, prioritize their daily tasks, communicate specialized plant-care needs, monitor and measure performance, resolve problems, and approve timesheets.
  • Purchase greenhouse supplies, maintain plant-care inventory, solicit greenhouse-supply donations from vendors, and maintain pesticide materials and records to meet state and federal requirements.
  • Perform additional duties supporting Department and Plant Research Growth Facility goals and objectives.
  • Lead tours for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Serve as a guest lecturer for classes held at the Research Greenhouse Complex.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master of Science in Plant Science is preferred.
  • Experience with automated greenhouse controls such as Priva, Wadsworth, or similar systems is preferred.
  • Experience with Integrated Pest Management methods is preferred.
  • Experience producing and supporting plant-based research is preferred.
  • Ability to manage priorities and establish effective working relationships with other campus departments is preferred.
  • Numerical, organizational, and communication skills are preferred.
  • Pest scouting skills and experience are preferred.
  • Ability to operate a forklift or obtain the required training within six months is preferred.
