Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent education is required.
  • Previous healthcare experience, such as Patient Care Assistant, Transporter, or Environmental Services Technician, or completion of a basic Perioperative Nursing Assistant course is preferred.
  • Basic Life Support certification or Instructor certification from the American Heart Association is required.
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English is required to perform essential functions affecting patient or employee safety and security.
  • The role requires the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform assigned duties, as assessed through ongoing skills and competency assessments and performance evaluations.
  • The role requires effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and coworkers.
  • The role requires interpersonal and teamwork skills when working with the healthcare team and serving patients, visitors, physicians, and coworkers.
Responsibilities
  • Apply basic knowledge and skills to communicate appropriately and perform delegated nursing-assistant-level tasks for assigned age-specific and diverse patient populations under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Assist with the physical preparation of patients and the physical environment before surgical procedures.
  • Provide assistant-level care to Surgical Services patients within defined unit-specific limits.
  • Prepare and clean surgical rooms using prescribed sterile techniques and maintain a clean and organized environment.
  • Transport patients to and from assigned rooms and assist with patient preparation and positioning before surgical procedures.
  • Check and maintain appropriate levels of surgical gowns, masks, cleaning supplies, and other department supplies.
  • Transport specimens, cultures, blood products, and body fluids to the laboratory using universal precautions.
  • Report patient observations, conditions, and problems to licensed personnel while protecting patient and family privacy and safety.
  • Report near misses and promptly enter errors into PSN to support process improvement and trend identification.
  • Support initiatives to prevent patient falls and hospital-acquired infections.
  • Use resources efficiently, manage time, prioritize daily tasks, and assist other team members as needed.
  • Seek guidance and validation from the preceptor and assigned licensed personnel when needed.
  • Complete and update the individual development plan on an ongoing basis.
  • Participate in performance-improvement projects and shared-governance activities.
  • Work five eight-hour day shifts per week, Monday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., plus on-call coverage as required.
