Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in nursing is preferred.
  • A registered nurse license issued by the State Board of Nursing in the state of employment is required and must be in good standing.
  • American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR certification is required, or must be obtained within 30 days of hire, with biannual recertification.
  • Formal training in management of the aggressive patient is required within 60 days of hire, with annual recertification.
  • At the Hospital's discretion, the employee may be required to hold a qualified medical professional designation and must be deemed competent to serve as a qualified medical professional under the Medical Staff bylaws.
  • Employees in Child/Adolescent Day Treatment programs licensed under HFS §40 must have training in psychiatric nursing, including work with children with mental health disorders, or one year of experience working in a clinical setting with these children.
Responsibilities
  • Perform professional nursing activities to help patients achieve or regain and maintain maximum physical, emotional, or social functioning.
  • Collect, record, and analyze pertinent admission-assessment data within the prescribed timeframe according to Hospital policy, including patient strengths and limitations, cultural, spiritual, and ethnic factors, discharge needs, medical and physical status, medication compliance and reactions, and age-specific needs.
  • Involve patients' family and friends in assessment and documentation by observing relevant interactions and obtaining assessment data from support systems when appropriate.
  • Initiate and update treatment plans and documentation, including participating in care planning, reviewing multidisciplinary assessments, participating in care conferences, developing the plan of care with patients and families, documenting treatment goals, and reviewing plans as goals change or are achieved.
  • Identify, interpret, and document information from nursing interviews, observations, physical assessments, and diagnostic data, and confer with other healthcare professionals as appropriate.
  • Review current laboratory data and follow up with the physician.
  • Evaluate fall risk and initiate fall precautions when indicated.
  • Identify potential for self-abuse, suicidality, or assaultive behavior.
  • Develop age-appropriate interventions and assess changes in patient status, documenting interventions accordingly.
  • Implement patient care and administer medications safely and accurately using the correct patient, medication, dose, time, and route.
  • Maintain knowledge of each medication's purpose and effects, document medication administration and patient responses, and transcribe and implement physician medication orders accurately.
  • Monitor expected and unexpected medication effects, including adverse reactions, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, and other consequences.
  • Conduct and document patient education about medications and maintain current knowledge of new pharmacologic products and therapeutic uses.
  • Identify unit-system, communication, and resource problems that affect patient care and suggest solutions to the Clinical Services manager.
  • Identify unit educational equipment and supply needs.
  • Serve on a unit-based committee or participate in ongoing unit-based projects.
  • Participate as a project leader.
  • Develop professional-growth goals and objectives and discuss methods for achieving them with the Clinical Services manager.
  • Pursue professional-skill development through continuing education.
  • Discuss progress toward work-improvement goals regularly with the Clinical Services manager.
  • Seek projects or extra tasks based on unit or immediate-shift needs.
  • Provide patient information with the Patient Accounts department to support compliance with federal and state statutes.
