Requirements
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse, and APRN (Nurse Anesthetist) in the State of West Virginia is required.
  • Board Certified or Recertified by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists.
  • 2 years’ experience as a CRNA
Responsibilities
  • Maintains competence in airway management and usage of all airway adjuncts. i.e., bullard, fiberoptic scope, ILMA, etc.
  • Takes appropriate precautions to minimize risks of infection of patients, and other health care professionals.
  • Participates in the pre-anesthetic evaluation of the patients and the selection of anesthetic agents and techniques.
  • Performs appropriate techniques of the anesthetic plan such as, but not limited to, insertion of intravenous catheters, insertion of invasive monitoring catheters according to established protocol; administering of analgesic blocks; endotracheal intubation and extubation; performing arterial punctures for interpretation of arterial blood gases.
  • Monitors the patient’s physical response to the anesthetic and informs the clinical team of any adverse condition. Manages the anesthesia process to include induction, maintenance, and emergence of general, regional, and monitored anesthesia cases. Recognizes abnormal patient responses to anesthesia or to any adjunctive medication or form of therapy. Initiate corrective measures. Determines the need for additional laboratory tests and provide resuscitative care as necessary. Evaluate and manage the patient in the immediate post-operative period.
  • Administers IV fluids relative to the patient’s medical history and surgical procedure. Administer blood products after obtaining a hematocrit.
  • Appropriately documents the patient status in the anesthesia record.
  • Performs all required safety and performance checks on anesthesia-related equipment and verify the appropriate supplies before initiating care. Procure and assemble equipment and supplies as indicated if anesthesia tech is not available.
  • In accordance with departmental and regulatory compliance standards, reviews appropriate documentation for informed consent and identify appropriate surgical site during SBAR with circulating RN and holding room RN. Participates in surgical pause in the OR with surgical team in accordance with departmental and regulatory compliance standards.
  • Communicates appropriately with all individuals involved in the peri-operative and post-operative care of the patient.
  • Assists with the teaching and evaluation of newly-hired CRNAs, SRNAs, and medical students in the clinical area, as applicable.
  • Assumes responsibility and is accountable for controlled substances according to department and hospital policy and State and federal guidelines.
  • Coordinates breaks, lunches, relief order and assignment of cases. Assesses the immediate staffing needs based on consultation with the clinical team.
  • Advises the Director/Manager on the hiring, retention, interviewing and recruitment of staff.
  • Functions as a staff role model by promoting cooperative problem solving, individual and group goal orientation, appropriate delegation of departmental activities and fostering team building through individual coaching and counseling, regular attendance at staff meetings, annual performance appraisals, and active participation in the activities of the department and hospital.
  • Performs on-going written goal setting, peer review, and performance reviews according to hospital policy. Provides on-going feedback to employees concerning job performance. Coaches and counsels employees, under the direction of the Director/Manager.
  • In conjunction with leaders, assures the most economical utilization of time, materials and resources through the review of workflow and staffing patterns in order to achieve optimal productivity and to provide cost effective staffing patterns that ensure appropriate utilization of staff and skill mix to provide patient care.
  • In conjunction with the Chief and Assistant Chief CRNA, Assures the adherence of all standards and policies as set forth by WVUH and the accrediting bodies for the purposes of licensure, regulation and accreditation.
  • Assists leaders in timely follow-up investigations incident reports. Ultimately, if corrective action of an employee is required, the Chief CRNA will be responsible.
  • In conjunction with CRNA leadership, facilitates the professional development of personnel. Oversees and participates in the orientation, training, and continuing education of the staff (departmental and interdepartmental) and other health related personnel.
