New Accessibility Lab plugin prototype lays groundwork for Accessibility Team's first canonical plugin. Automattic's Anne McCarthy has released a prototype accessibility plugin with buy-in from the WordPress Accessibility Team, and a hard line against treating it as a substitute for accessibility in WordPress core. Aug 24, 2026 Automattic-sponsored contributor Anne McCarthy has published a prototype for a new Accessibility Lab plugin, the first step toward the WordPress Accessibility Team having its own canonical plugin for building and testing accessibility features. McCarthy posted the plugin to GitHub on Friday and invited contributors to help get it ready for the WordPress.org plugin directory. The initial version features three modules, including configurable Media Library view options, real-time heading-order validation, and a block accessibility checks framework contributed by developer Troy Chaplin from his existing Block Accessibility Checks plugin. The prototype came out of McCarthy's conversations with the Accessibility Team about where a plugin could genuinely help move core forward 'and where it very much can't,' they said in their announcement on the Make WordPress Accessibility blog. The team's buy-in marks a big shift from where things stood 15 months ago. When WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg suggested in May 2025 that accessibility improvements could be developed as a canonical plugin, the idea drew criticism. Long-time Accessibility Team contributor and core committer Joe Dolson said at the time that putting accessibility features in a plugin "sends a clear message that the feature is something that only some users will need." Equalize Digital CEO Amber Hinds and web accessibility specialist Rian Rietveld raised concerns about maintenance burden and the risk of sidelining disabled users. McCarthy addresses those objections head-on in their announcement post. "This is not 'install this plugin to have accessibility needs met' or 'to make WordPress accessible.' That approach causes real harm," McCarthy said. "The Accessibility Lab plugin is not a substitute for fixing accessibility in Core. It is a place to test new ideas, gather feedback, and develop features that need real-world testing before they are ready for Core." Dolson, who reviewed the announcement post, has given the concept conditional support, as The Repository reported earlier this month, provided features have a real path into core and the plugin isn't used to override core decisions. Once it reaches the plugin directory, Accessibility Lab will become the third canonical plugin maintained by a WordPress Make team, following the Performance Team's Performance Lab plugin and the AI Team's AI plugin. McCarthy said that Accessibility Lab borrowed from both plugins: Performance Lab's approach of shipping testable modules for features headed to core, and the AI plugin's model of giving community-built solutions an official home. "Accessibility needs come up again and again across WordPress in schools, agencies, and everywhere in between," McCarthy said. "This plugin is a way to collect that work in one place for all to benefit from." The most developed module in the prototype is Chaplin's Block Accessibility Checks, which provides real-time, three-tier WCAG validation for blocks and document structure. Its hook system is open enough that third-party blocks get checked too. Chaplin works in higher education at Carleton University in Ottawa, and McCarthy said Chaplin was open to contributing his work so that "a higher ed accessibility office and a hobbyist blogger can point to the same trusted answer" to the problem of inaccessible content going live. The plugin's heading-order module addresses one of the most common accessibility mistakes editors make without realizing it: skipping heading levels. McCarthy said the feature gives writers a real-time warning when a heading block introduces a gap in the document outline. The Media Library module adds view controls beyond the infinite scroll opt-out that shipped in WordPress 7.1, including item density and persistent file name visibility. McCarthy named searchable alt text as an example of what could be built next for the plugin. Alt text currently lives in the postmeta table, making it unsearchable at scale - a problem that's been tracked on Trac for years. McCarthy said that it was "precisely the kind of problem this plugin exists for: worth fixing, and architecturally hard enough that Core can't move forward without a real implementation to test against first." The plugin is temporarily on McCarthy's personal GitHub account. When WHODUNIT-sponsored core committer Jb Audras asked in the comments why it wasn't in the official WordPress repository, McCarthy said they wanted developers to help sharpen the code before transferring it. "I also wanted to 'show' rather than 'tell' when starting the conversation around doing this," they said. Audras has already opened an issue proposing a new module that would let users add custom ARIA attributes at the block level, an idea he said came from a custom plugin his agency already uses. Contributors can file issues and open pull requests on the GitHub repository or join the #accessibility channel on WordPress Slack. Automattic has launched WordPress.com Education, a free classroom suite designed for teachers and students. The programme includes a full WordPress.com domain for each student, free domain names on .blog or .art, and plugin support. Teachers can provide free access for one year without requiring credit card details. The Student plan includes 6 GB of storage, backups, staging sites, and support for plugins, SFTP/SSH, phpMyAdmin, and Studio Sync. After the first year, students can subscribe for $2 monthly or revert to a free WordPress.com site whilst retaining all content. Automattic piloted the programme with 5,000 students across 27 countries. Among educators, 88.9% reported improved student employability, whilst 81.5% noted enhanced entrepreneurial capacity. The initiative aims to introduce WordPress to younger users who typically favour social media platforms.
Free CRM tools are now more accessible: what African founders need to know. Managing customer relationships is one of the biggest challenges for growing startups. Automattic's relationship manager app Mesh is now available on Android. The software, acquired by WordPress.com's parent company last year, allows users to visualize and track contacts in their personal and professional networks, add notes, and set reminders to reach out. The Android version supports split-screen and pop-up views, keyboard shortcuts for tablets, home screen widgets, and real-time sync across devices. Mesh interoperates with Automattic's messaging app Beeper, enabling users to draft texts or access profiles directly. The app includes Nexus AI in early access, letting users query their network by company, location, or expertise. Personal information isn't used for ad targeting, as Mesh operates on subscriptions. It's free for up to 1,000 contacts, with paid tiers offering unlimited contacts and additional features. Around 70% of Mesh's customers use it for business purposes.
Automattic's personal CRM Mesh expands to Android devices with enhanced features. Mesh, a relationship manager and personal CRM acquired by Automattic, the parent company of WordPress.com, has launched its app on Android devices. The app allows users to manage personal and professional networks by adding notes, setting reminders, and visualizing connections. * On Android, Mesh has been customized to integrate with key platform features such as split-screen and pop-up views, keyboard shortcuts for foldables and tablets, in-app search, home screen widgets with Material You colors, and real-time sync across devices. * Mesh's broader strategic plan involves deeper integration with Automattic's messaging app Beeper, which connects users across platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Slack. * Mesh's Nexus AI is in early access, offering features to navigate personal networks by identifying connections at specific companies or regions. * The use of AI in Mesh is aimed at improving personal and professional relationship management, with features for voice command and business card scanning. * The app is supported by subscriptions, guaranteeing that user data is not shared or used for ad targeting. * While primarily used for business purposes, Mesh is designed to cater to both business and consumer needs. It is available as a free download with in-app purchases on Google Play.
