Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited law school.
  • At least one year of experience practicing law.
  • A current license to practice law in the State of Texas.
  • Experience as a lead prosecutor for all levels of misdemeanor offenses, or experience providing legal services in conjunction with civil litigation, or appellate work on direct appeals.
Responsibilities
  • Perform litigation and legal research assignments and make tactical and legal decisions in assigned cases.
  • Prosecute felony cases in assigned court, including case evaluation, preparation, and management.
  • Evaluate criminal complaints, accept or reject cases for prosecution, determine appropriate charges, and prepare documentation for indictments.
  • Evaluate assigned cases or lawsuits by reviewing documentation, conducting and interpreting legal research, interviewing witnesses or persons with knowledge of the cases, and gathering evidence.
  • Draft, file, and respond to motions, briefs, and other legal documents for trials and hearings.
  • Explain the legal process to potential witnesses, prepare witnesses for court testimony, and keep clients or victims and families informed about case status.
  • Gather, prepare, and present evidence, exhibits, and related material for trials or hearings.
  • Represent the State or clients in hearings and jury or court trials by conducting jury selection, presenting opening statements, conducting direct and cross-examinations, and presenting closing arguments.
  • Negotiate settlements or plea bargains and obtain approval of plea bargains or settlement agreements.
  • Prepare legal documents when settlements or plea-bargain agreements are reached, secure required signatures, and file documents as required.
  • May manage court dockets and case schedules to ensure deadlines are met and records and documentation are accurate and current.
  • Train or assist in training Attorneys I and II.
