The Materials Department at CFS supports design engineers, supply chain, and manufacturing by guiding in selection of materials that meet design intent, and executes testing, validation, and creation of design curves for materials, and conducting R&D to develop new materials and processes to enable fusion power deployment. The work is undertaken in support of delivering SPARC, the net energy tokamak under construction in Devens, MA, and ultimately in designing the ARC fusion power plant. These devices pose unique materials challenges including neutron fluxes produced by deuterium-tritium fusion, high heat and mechanical loads driven by high magnetic fields and cryogenic environment, molten salt coolant systems, and manufacturing challenges driven by components’ sizing and processes such as welding and other joining methods. To support this mission, the CFS Materials Department is seeking a Senior Materials Data Analytics Engineer with expertise in Data Analytics and Materials Informatics.
The ideal candidate would have a background in both data analytics, and materials science and/or physics. He/she will be instrumental in selecting the CFS Materials Database and creating data engineering standards such as statistics and probability-based design curves. The tasks will include, but are not limited to, exploratory data analysis, dataset preparation, and generation of design curves for CFS materials. With time, the responsibilities will expand to physics-based modeling, synthetic data generation, and first-principles modeling and simulation to support development of CFS materials. He/she will collaborate with other engineers and subject matter experts to achieve deployment of the database, desktop applications, and design curves.
This team member will:
- Collaborate with Materials Department Engineers to create workflows to enable the appropriate capture, storage, data visualization and analysis of data generated within Materials domain
- Perform hands-on data analysis and modeling with data sets to develop design curves applying statistical techniques
- In collaboration with design engineers develop material design curves methodology capable of determining statistically significant minimum properties for tokamak applications such as low and high cycle fatigue, dielectric breakdown, radiation effects
- Develop and implement analytical procedures and applications for estimating fatigue life capability for materials in tokamak application
- Assist in benchmarking and creating metrics for material property variability and sources of variability in manufacturing processes
- Create statistical frameworks to characterize manufacturing variability
- Support writing materials standard specifications
- Stay current with the evolving technology and modeling techniques
The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:
- MS in Materials Science Engineering, Applied Physics, Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or another quantitative field
- Minimum of 3+ years’ experience in data science, statistics, and/or analytics
- Strong statistics background with hypothesis testing, multivariate linear regression, nonparametric methods, deterministic and probabilistic approaches
- Strong background in Materials Science
- Proficiency in Python
- Understanding of data models and databases
- Knowledgeable of design of experiments methods
- Understanding process-structure-properties-performance principles
- Knowledge of UQ and V&V standards
- Able to think creatively and possess strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively cross-functionally
- Excellent organizational skills including prioritization of multiple concurrent projects
- Ability to break down complex problems into smaller deliverables that add value.
Additional preferred experience and/or qualifications:
- Experience of fully owning analytical projects end to end starting with collecting and driving requirements through developing data-based solutions in collaboration with a wide variety of internal stakeholders
- Experience with object-oriented languages such as Rust or C/C++
- Experience with database query languages such a SQL
- Experience displaying complex quantitative data in a simple, intuitive format and presenting findings clearly and concisely
- Experience making and justifying decisions in fast paced engineering settings
- Written and verbal communication with technical teams
- Taking under-defined problems and driving them to a state of completion
- Operating in a flexible, service-oriented engineering domain team
- Perform activities such as typing or sitting for extended periods of time
- Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, cryogenics and small quantities of acids/etchants
- Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
