Requirements
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Must meet Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS)-approved state and/or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline.
  • All appropriate state licensure, education, and training required by the state must be met.
  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital setting or a related facility is preferred.
  • Continued employment is dependent on successful completion of the organization dialysis training program and successful completion of CPR certification.
  • Employees are required to take the Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment; failing the test does not preclude employment, and reasonable accommodations may be considered.
  • The position requires frequent, prolonged periods of standing, bending, heavy lifting and moving of patients, and assisting with ambulation.
  • The employee must be able to occasionally push or pull equipment with up to 15 pounds of force and lift solutions up to 30 pounds frequently and 40 pounds occasionally to a height of 5 feet.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse in accordance with organizational policies, procedures, training, and applicable regulations.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines.
  • Assist health care team members with patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures, disease processes, and vascular access.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform vascular access cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated or permitted by state law.
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weights and perform vascular access evaluations.
  • Initiate dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders, including blood flow and dialysate flow.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide prescribed interventions; monitor patient responses to dialysis therapy.
  • Discontinue dialysis treatments according to established procedures, evaluate patients before termination of venous access, obtain hemostasis, and apply appropriate dressings.
  • Evaluate patients before discharge.
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and ultrafiltration modeling as prescribed.
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled, including Narrow Venous Limits 160.
  • Accurately and promptly record vital signs and treatment parameters on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and document patient treatment information and interventions.
  • Report significant information, changes in patient condition, and unusual findings to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Perform machine safety checks and evaluate vascular access during treatment, including arterial and venous monitoring pressures.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory testing and prepare specimens for collection.
  • Clean blood spills immediately with appropriate disinfectant according to facility policy.
  • Prepare, organize, and efficiently use supplies and equipment to prevent wastage.
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under the supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff on appropriate programs under nurse supervision.
  • Maintain environmental integrity and aesthetics by ensuring all areas are safe and clean.
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments.
  • Prepare for dialysis treatments, perform required pretreatment machine alarm testing including Pressure Holding Testing, and initiate the Solution Delivery System.
  • Complete and document ongoing participation in Continuous Quality Improvement activities.
  • Enter treatment data into the designated clinical application accurately and promptly.
  • Review treatment sheets for completeness and ensure required nursing signatures and corrections are completed.
  • Prepare initial patient charts for admission and compile paperwork for placement in charts.
  • Prepare and print laboratory requisitions for prescribed or stat specimens.
  • Collect, label, prepare, and store laboratory samples according to laboratory specifications and ensure collection by the appropriate laboratory courier.
  • Assist with infection control audits and support staff and patient adherence to infection control practices.
  • Follow infection control policies and procedures and reinforce infection control education for patients and families under the direction of the clinical manager or designee.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional dialysis care.
  • Reinforce education and care information for new patients as allowed by state law.
  • Liaise with appropriate staff members to coordinate disciplines and support the patient experience.
  • Assist patients in understanding home dialysis products, home dialysis benefits, and treatment options, including demonstrating peritoneal dialysis setup.
  • Set up and perform treatments on all machines used in the Transitional Care Unit.
  • Assist with coordination of transitions to patients' chosen dialysis modalities.
  • Assist with supply ordering and inventory for the Transitional Care Unit.
  • Travel between assigned facilities and various community locations and attend regional, business unit, and corporate meetings when required.
