Requirements
  • Experience working on projects in both the United Kingdom and overseas.
  • Substantial senior operational experience within a refurbishment or interior fit-out main contractor.
  • A demonstrable track record of concurrently delivering a combined portfolio of individual fit-out and new-build projects across design, pre-construction, build, and maintenance stages.
  • Strong commercial acumen, including fluency in cost value reconciliations, contract management, cost-to-complete forecasting, valuations, variations, retentions, and final accounts.
  • Evidence of protecting or improving margin on live projects, not just delivering them on time.
  • Proven leadership of multi-site, multi-project delivery teams.
  • A strong health and safety record and a safety-first approach.
Responsibilities
  • Own safe, on-time, on-budget delivery across every live project in the portfolio.
  • Own the master portfolio delivery programme and ensure individual project plans are realistic, resourced, and properly sequenced, with early identification of slippage and clear recovery actions.
  • Plan the supply chain, resources, labour, and materials around the summer delivery peak.
  • Input into buildability, method, programme, and risk at bid stage, ensuring that sold work can be built at the sold price.
  • Own tendered and realised gross margin and drive a rigorous monthly cost value reconciliation process, explaining movements between tendered and forecast margin.
  • Control subcontractor packages, procurement, variations, and preliminaries.
  • Ensure client and subcontractor variations are captured, priced, agreed, and billed.
  • Drive timely valuations, applications, and final accounts, and manage certification and retention.
  • Provide reliable supply-chain input and evidenced cost-to-complete forecasts.
  • Lead, develop, and strengthen the operational and site teams where necessary.
  • Set and enforce delivery standards.
  • Build and manage a supply chain capable of supporting significant growth.
  • Contribute as a peer to the chief executive officer, chief financial officer/finance, and commercial leadership on strategy, capital allocation, and growth planning.
  • Own health, safety, and environmental performance across all sites.
  • Own quality and snagging performance and reduce defects and rework.
  • Ensure compliance with Construction (Design and Management) regulations and all relevant regulations, including requirements for working on and around school sites.

What believers are saying

  • The company still markets active growth across 19 countries and 3,000 clients.
  • UBT's education and charitable reinvestment strengthens brand appeal among purpose-driven employers.

What critics are saying

  • UBT's model depends on founder-led trust and family-business referrals, concentrating revenue risk.
  • The Precinct and group-buying offerings face replication by niche consultancies and procurement platforms.
  • If consulting margins weaken, UBT's reinvest-all-profits mission limits capital for acquisitions.

What makes Universal Business Team unique

  • UBT serves 3,000 family businesses across 19 countries, unusually focused on family firms.
  • The Precinct combines consulting with coworking in Sydney, Auckland, and the UK.
