Requirements
  • Proven experience delivering professional, friendly, respectful, and efficient customer service in a fast-paced retail setting while managing competing demands and long customer lines.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a high-volume environment requiring multitasking and teamwork, with direct responsibility for shipping, receiving, purchasing, and inventory operations.
  • Proven work experience lifting heavy materials up to 70 pounds for extended periods of time, including restocking inventory shelves in multiple locations by carrying stock up rolling ladders.
  • Direct experience delivering a high level of customer service, with strong interpersonal and communication skills when supporting a diverse customer base in person, by phone, and electronically.
  • Established experience using inventory management and procurement systems, including online purchasing platforms, to order, receive, track, and research supplies.
  • Proficiency using office productivity software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook beyond baseline competency, including report creation and data tracking.
  • Four years of related work experience, two of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or two years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Responsibilities
  • Provide professional first-point-of-contact service to Stockroom customers at the checkout counter, processing purchases and returns.
  • Manage long customer checkout lines efficiently and maintain calm in a busy, high-traffic environment.
  • Assist customers with inquiries regarding pricing, store layout, and product availability.
  • Provide expert guidance to customers regarding Stockroom policies and procedures, including material ordering, available ordering methods, use of Stockroom Cards for payment, and guidance on updating Stockroom Cards.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable resource for the Yale research community regarding chemicals, life-science materials, and proper ordering and storage practices, including temperature requirements.
  • Restock inventory shelves across multiple locations, including safely using rolling ladders to access higher shelving.
  • Receive incoming shipments at the loading dock, including palletized deliveries requiring use of a pallet jack.
  • Properly store scientific chemicals, life-science supplies, and laboratory materials according to safety and compliance standards.
  • Place orders with vendors, ensuring correct contract pricing, and track shipments to confirm timely delivery.
  • Accurately receive and record incoming orders in the computerized inventory system.
  • Perform clerical and administrative tasks related to stockroom operations.
  • Provide specialized information on administrative, academic, financial aid, and procedural matters to students, prospective students, faculty, and staff.
  • Assist staff, faculty, and students with the completion of forms; identify and resolve errors through contact with students and University departments; and maintain logs and records of activities.
  • Compile statistical data and information.
  • Establish and maintain filing systems.
  • Use a computer terminal to input and retrieve data.
  • Merge and manipulate filing systems.
  • Monitor and reconcile financial data.
  • Keyboard letters, memoranda, and other materials.
  • Compose general written material.
  • Schedule and coordinate conferences, meetings, appointments, and classrooms.
  • May oversee and instruct support staff.
  • Perform clerical functions incidental to office activities.
