- Be enrolled in or have completed a NAACLS-accredited or NAACLS-approved Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or Clinical Laboratory Science equivalent program leading to or paired with a bachelor's degree.
- Hold a bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or Biology with the required Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science certificate and internship pathway.
- Hold a bachelor's degree with biological science, chemistry, and mathematics coursework, plus an appropriate internship and a completed associate's degree or undergraduate certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology.
- Hold ASCP, AMT, or equivalent Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology certification, or be registry eligible and complete certification within one year of hire.
- Maintain ongoing certification when required by ASCP or AMT certification timing rules.
- Foreign-educated candidates must provide a detailed equivalency evaluation including a United States-equivalent degree.
- Be able to operate basic computer programs used for documentation and departmental record keeping.
- Be able to work under specific time constraints and communicate verbally and in writing at all organizational levels.
- Be able to identify problems that may adversely affect laboratory results and resolve them appropriately.
- Meet dependent driver's-license and insurability requirements when required by job duties.
- Be able to work irregular hours, mandatory overtime, holidays, weekends, and on-call hours.
- Be able to work around noxious fumes, unpleasant noises, chemicals, biological materials, and organisms; sustain prolonged visual concentration; and lift bulky or moderately heavy items up to 45 pounds.
- Perform diagnostic and analytic testing on human specimens to produce reliable data for diagnosis, treatment, and patient monitoring.
- Work in one or more laboratory disciplines under the supervision of the department manager, supervisor, senior technologist, or delegated in-charge individual.
- Demonstrate competencies specific to the populations served by the laboratory location.
- Understand and participate in pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical clinical laboratory testing.
- Anticipate and maintain inventory of supplies and reagents to ensure uninterrupted testing.
- Maintain laboratory policies, procedures, and standards.
- Operate instruments and perform scheduled preventative maintenance; troubleshoot equipment problems and take action to resolve them.
- Execute and evaluate quality control and quality assurance procedures, documenting and reporting as required by regulatory agencies.
- Perform, validate, interpret, document, and report laboratory test results according to department assignment.
- Perform internal and external proficiency testing in the same manner as patient samples.
- Assist in training, orienting, and touring new staff and students.
- Participate in Laboratory Quality Program activities.
- Alter start time, shift, department, or site when requested based on patient-care needs.
- Perform other assigned duties when qualified, such as charge-technician duties and competency evaluations.
- Collect, process, and evaluate specimens when direct patient contact is required.
- For point-of-care assignments, train non-laboratory testing personnel, conduct and document competency assessments, operate and maintain point-of-care instruments, troubleshoot equipment remotely or in person, evaluate point-of-care quality-control results, process external proficiency samples, manage supply inventory, and operate computer middleware for analyzer interfaces, personnel management, and test-result management.
- Two years of Medical Laboratory Science experience for point-of-care-only assignments.
