Requirements
  • A B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent and at least 6 years of relevant experience in commercial product design and development are required.
  • First-principles understanding of statics, mechanics, materials science, heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics is required, including the ability to apply these principles in hand calculations.
  • Extensive experience taking mechanical designs from concept through production, including prototype builds and manufacturing release, is required.
  • Proven experience in Design for Manufacturability and Design for Assembly, working with manufacturing partners to optimize designs for producibility, assembly, and reliability, is required.
  • Demonstrated experience packaging and integrating electromechanical systems involving both high-voltage and low-voltage electrical components is required.
  • Proficiency in three-dimensional computer-aided design, with SolidWorks strongly preferred, and thermal and structural finite element analysis tools is required.
  • Strong hands-on aptitude in laboratory, shop-floor, and test-rig environments is required.
  • Experience creating geometric dimensioning and tolerancing-compliant two-dimensional fabrication drawings according to ASME Y14.5 is required.
Responsibilities
  • Lead concept development, design trades, and down-selection decisions for all mechanical subsystems from water purification through post-production hydrogen purification.
  • Own three-dimensional computer-aided design of complex parts and assemblies using SolidWorks or equivalent, including sheet metal, plastics, insulation systems, sealing methods, connectors, and fasteners.
  • Review and develop process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, and mechanical design documentation.
  • Perform first-principles hand calculations for sizing and performance of fluid, thermal, and structural systems.
  • Collaborate with electrical and electronics engineering teams to integrate high-voltage power electronics and low-voltage control, sensing, and communications systems into mechanical enclosures.
  • Design packaging solutions for high-voltage electrical assemblies, including bus bars, power modules, and high-current connectors, ensuring proper insulation, creepage and clearance compliance, and thermal management.
  • Design and validate cooling technologies, including heat exchangers and forced-air systems, for thermal management of electrolyzer stacks, power electronics, and ancillary electrical components.
  • Ensure enclosure designs meet relevant electrical safety standards, including UL, IEC, and NFPA, for high-voltage systems handling direct-current bus voltages typical of proton-exchange-membrane electrolysis applications.
  • Define and manage interface control documents between mechanical and electrical subsystems.
  • Partner with manufacturing engineering to embed Design for Manufacturability and Design for Assembly principles from concept through production release.
  • Create and maintain full balance-of-plant documentation, including bills of materials, piping and instrumentation diagrams, and fluid system specifications.
  • Apply experience with hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and water piping systems, including pressure ratings, material compatibility, and leak-testing protocols.
  • Develop test plans and lead laboratory testing and validation activities to confirm product reliability, safety, and performance.
  • Create and maintain product lifecycle management documentation, including bills of materials, engineering drawings, design calculations, and failure mode and effects analyses.
Desired Qualifications
  • An advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field is preferred.
  • Experience with PEM electrolysis, fuel cell systems, or related electrochemical systems is preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, or other high-purity gas systems, including pressure management, material selection (316L SS, PTFE, PEEK), and leak testing, is preferred.
  • Experience with water purification technologies (deionization, ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis) and post-production gas purification is preferred.
  • Multi-physics and computational fluid dynamics simulation experience using ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL, or similar tools is preferred.
  • Familiarity with electrical safety standards relevant to high-voltage systems, including UL 508A, IEC 60204, and NFPA 70E, is preferred.
  • Experience with product lifecycle management systems for bill-of-materials and drawing management is preferred.

Fourier Earth provides engineering services and scalable clean energy solutions for governments, large corporations, and sustainability-focused organizations to shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy. It develops practical energy technologies and deploys them at scale through consulting, project delivery, and licensing of its proprietary technologies. It differentiates itself with hands-on, large-scale implementation and direct work with governments and major organizations, moving from planning to full deployment and licensing rather than focusing on small pilots. Its goal is to enable a global transition to affordable, distributable clean energy that reduces carbon footprints and benefits society.

Simplify Jobs

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • The India pilot opens a large market where grid reliability drives storage demand.
  • Hiring across Mountain View and Hyderabad signals active engineering buildout, not retrenchment.
  • Recent investor backing and public activity show continued momentum after stealth exit.

What critics are saying

  • Plug Power, Air Liquide, and others sell proven electrolyzer stacks with larger balance sheets.
  • Industrial pilots can stall after demonstrations; Fourier still lacks disclosed commercial deployments or revenue.
  • Hydrogen economics remain brutal; one delayed customer win can starve Fourier before scale.

What makes Fourier unique

  • Fourier's on-site hydrogen system targets generation and storage without pipelines or transport.
  • April 2025’s $18.5M Series A from General Catalyst and Paramark funded manufacturing scale-up.
  • June 2026 Gujarat pilot with Payal Industrial Park validates industrial, distributed hydrogen storage.
