- A Master's degree in Theology, Divinity, Spirituality, Religious Studies, Pastoral Counseling, or a related field of ministry from a school accredited by a member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation is required.
- Completion of at least one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education is required.
- A licensed or ordained chaplain in good standing with their faith tradition is required.
- Completion of four units of Clinical Pastoral Education in a hospital setting.
- Five years of pastoral ministry in a church setting.
- Three years of pastoral care as a chaplain in a hospital, hospice, or other care facility.
- Membership in, or eligibility for membership in, the Association of Professional Chaplains or the National Association of Catholic Chaplains.
- Association of Professional Chaplains Board Certification.
