Requirements
  • Proficiency in Linux and Unix system administration, including configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting distributions such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle Solaris, zLinux, Amazon Linux, and Azure Linux.
  • Familiarity with kernel parameters, compiling and updating the kernel, managing system resources, and tuning operating systems for performance.
  • Advanced scripting skills in shell scripting, Bash, Zsh, Python, Perl, or Ruby.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation and configuration management tools such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, GitHub, or SaltStack.
  • Knowledge of DevOps principles, continuous integration and continuous deployment pipelines, version control systems, and containerization.
  • Understanding of networking protocols including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, HTTP/HTTPS, FTP, and NFS, plus network troubleshooting tools such as netstat, tcpdump, and Wireshark.
  • Knowledge of system security practices including user management, firewall configuration, SELinux, AppArmor, and intrusion detection or prevention systems.
  • Experience with SSL/TLS, SSH, VPNs, LDAP, Kerberos, or Active Directory.
  • Advanced use of top, vmstat, iotop, and sar for system monitoring and performance optimization.
  • Skill in diagnosing kernel issues, application crashes, and resource contention using strace, lsof, dmesg, and server logs.
  • Ability to forecast resource requirements for future server scalability.
  • Experience managing virtualized server infrastructures using VMware, KVM, or Xen.
  • Proficiency deploying and maintaining Docker or Podman containers and orchestrating workloads with Kubernetes or OpenShift.
  • Expertise managing Linux and Unix servers across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, including automated provisioning and scaling.
  • Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, or MongoDB databases on Linux and Unix servers.
  • Experience configuring RAID, LVM, and ZFS storage solutions.
  • Ability to work with developers, network engineers, infrastructure teams, and operations teams to resolve issues and implement solutions.
  • Experience with business, functional, and technical areas or disciplines and conducting research in specialized areas.
  • Experience proposing solutions to problems within the candidate’s functional expertise.
  • Ability to work and analyze independently and as part of a team.
  • Expert experience directing teams and discussions at various levels concerning Linux and Unix division matters.
  • Experience leveraging staff with detailed knowledge of servers, operating systems, and applied security principles.
  • Experience identifying risks in Linux and Unix systems, troubleshooting and resolving issues with technical experts, and reviewing and reporting on security principles, concepts, policies, and regulations.
  • Expert knowledge of best business practices, industry standards, concepts, factors, and risks, documented in clear narrative or graphic reports.
  • Senior system administration skill, preferably with Solaris Unix and Red Hat Linux, including creating methods to gather and analyze source data, evaluating program effectiveness, analyzing business processes, implementing changes, analyzing reports, and maintaining tracking databases.
  • A bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related scientific or technical discipline, plus 10 or more years of work experience, is required; eight additional years of relevant experience may substitute for education.
  • Ability to pass a Tier 4/high background investigation.

  • Automate routine tasks such as backups, log rotation, patch management, and performance monitoring.
  • Enhance server throughput and functionality through networking and security management practices.
  • Deploy and maintain containers and orchestrate workloads in virtualized and cloud server environments.
  • Lead or support server deployment initiatives, migrations, and infrastructure upgrades.
  • Lead smaller projects or initiatives, such as deploying new technologies, improving system performance, or securing infrastructure.
