Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree.
  • At least three years of relevant special education experience and a master's degree in a related field, or at least three years of special education case management experience.
  • Experience teaching special education.
  • Certification in special education or a master's degree in special education.
  • Experience working collaboratively with stakeholders throughout a school.
  • Ability to lift 10 pounds.
  • Ability to stand frequently.
  • Ability to travel across KIPP DC schools.
  • Prolonged periods of sedentary work.
  • Ability to work fully in person at a school.
Responsibilities
  • Support and train case managers to comply with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and local regulations.
  • Provide technical assistance to staff members to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504.
  • Ensure student support services staff comply with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and local regulations.
  • Oversee compliance of more than 100 student support services files.
  • Own the scheduling and timely holding of Individualized Education Program, Student Education Plan, Eligibility, and Section 504 meetings.
  • Maintain full compliance in the special programs special education database system.
  • Provide professional development and support to case managers and help them gather and analyze assessments, grades, observations, and teacher comments before requesting evaluations; input information into the Special Education Data System.
  • Work with school psychologists and other related service providers to ensure assessments are completed in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate implementation of accommodations for state and local testing with school teams.
  • Collaborate with the case manager and Director on due process actions.
  • Participate in and support KIPP DC attorneys and attorneys representing students with disabilities.
  • Coordinate dissemination and collection of Medicaid-related documents for parents and other stakeholders.
  • Coordinate alternate assessments for students with disabilities.
  • Provide technical support and training on the Special Programs system to case managers and related service providers.
  • Facilitate and serve as the local education representative in multidisciplinary team meetings at the campus.
  • Support case managers and chair complex cases, including cases involving legal representation, as needed.
  • Take comprehensive meeting notes or monitor notes taken by case managers and record dissenting opinions.
  • Receive and review monthly reports on outstanding Individualized Education Program documentation.
  • Ensure case managers have the proper paperwork for meetings and that post-meeting follow-through is completed timely and efficiently.
  • Ensure Individualized Education Programs comply with federal and district regulations, goals are standards-based and relevant to each student, and present levels of performance are current and appropriate.
  • Facilitate data-based discussions to help the multidisciplinary team design Individualized Education Programs that support student growth.
  • Serve as the face of the student support team to parents, school leaders, staff, and community members.
  • Distribute weekly memos to school teams and facilitate department meetings when needed.
  • Facilitate small-group and whole-staff professional development as needed.
  • Attend professional development workshops, conferences, and meetings to stay current on student support services topics.
  • Manage small- and large-scale projects assigned by the Student Support Director of Compliance, such as MSAA testing or nonpublic programs.
  • Participate fully in staff activities, including staff meetings, accompanying students on field lessons, student recruitment and enrichment activities, and collaboration with other staff members.
