Requirements

  • Basic Life Support certification is required.

Responsibilities
  • Perform duties ethically and legally within the scope of certification.
  • Comply with HIPAA regulations.
  • Anticipate the surgeon’s needs and make equipment, medical gases, and supplies available for procedures.
  • Participate in continuing education, in-service training, staff meetings, and the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement program.
  • Open sterile packs using sterile technique and prepare instruments.
  • Set up the operating room, verify equipment functionality, and label sterile solutions.
  • Gather supplies and equipment for the operating room.
  • Maintain records of intraoperative medications, retrieved specimens, implanted tissue and implants, and liquids or chemicals on the field.
  • Pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgical assistants.
  • Hold retractors, cut suture, and count sponges, needles, or blades when applicable.
  • Prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Operate sterilizers, lights, suction, other operating-room equipment, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Assist with patient transfer to the post-anesthesia care unit when needed.
  • Clean and restock the operating room.
  • Assist with technical functions under supervision to support safe operations.
  • Prep, drape, and position patients for surgery.
  • Prepare cases according to the surgeon’s preference card.
  • Gather supplies and anticipate the needs of each case.
  • Assist with orienting new staff when needed.
  • Participate in developing a healthy work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • Two years of hospital main operating-room experience.
  • Certified Surgical Technician certification or another surgical-technician certification.
