- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Knowledge of surgical equipment and instrumentation is required.
- Frequent use of fine motor and sensory skills is required.
- Within 180 days, the technician must achieve competencies in using preference cards, managing supply inventory, performing equipment safety checks, setting up rooms, and cleaning and decontaminating surgical instruments.
- Identify and collect sterile instrumentation and equipment for surgical procedures.
- Assist the surgical team with intra-operative procedures.
- Assist the surgical team with room turnover.
- Respond appropriately to emergency situations in a calm manner.
- Monitor products and equipment for expiration, damage, or nonfunctioning conditions.
- Use surgical preference cards to verify or select instrumentation and equipment.
- Collaborate with the equipment technologist to inspect equipment for safety and function and report defects.
- Anticipate equipment needs for surgical procedures.
- Assist with room setup.
