Requirements
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • West Virginia Point of Care Technician (PoC) License
  • Phlebotomy Certification (CPT) preferred
  • Six (6) months of Phlebotomy, Lab Assistant or Cytopreparatory experience
  • Ability to use computer keyboard, monitor, mouse and calculator
  • Able to use computer software (PowerPoint, Word and Excel)
  • Able to use Fax machines, printers and other office equipment
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Background in medical terminology, biology, anatomy, or chemistry preferred
Responsibilities
  • Prepare specimens in order to perform basic diagnostic procedures designed to contribute to accurate reproducible patient results
  • Operate laboratory equipment/instrumentation for basic testing and specimen processing consistent with standard operating procedures
  • Prepare reagents and solutions required to complete specimen processing and testing according to the standard operating procedures
  • Perform quality control procedures under direct supervision to ascertain the reliability of reagents and laboratory equipment/instrumentation
  • Perform routine maintenance and quality control of laboratory equipment/instrumentation
  • Report test results with limited errors and in a timely manner
  • Utilize time, materials, and resources in an economical manner, prioritizing laboratory requests and workload to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency
  • Complete assigned workload within established turnaround times by adjusting organization of work according to test ordering status
  • Communicate any unusual supply usage or critical supply levels to the Supervisor/Manager
  • Communicate any unusual medical/technical problems or unusual patient results
  • Perform clerical duties as needed to support laboratory operations
  • Restocking supplies and preparing processing/embedding areas for the following day
  • Organizing and distributing patient slides to pathologists
  • Conducting routine instrument maintenance
  • Filing blocks and slides, scanning slides for Digital Pathology
  • Participating in Quality Control and Quality Assurance activities
  • Retrieving batches of tissue cassettes from the Gross Room and loading onto tissue processors
  • Following departmental standard operating procedures and policies to ensure consistency and compliance
  • Handling biohazardous and chemical hazardous materials with safety protocols and PPE
  • Strong visual acuity to distinguish small print and numbers on slides and cassettes
  • Ability to work collaboratively in fast-paced, detail-oriented environment
  • Maintaining high standards in laboratory practice
Desired Qualifications
  • Phlebotomy Certification (CPT)
  • Background in medical terminology, biology, anatomy, or chemistry
  • Experience in Histology laboratory environment
  • Experience with Digital Pathology
  • Exposure to QA/QC programs
