Requirements
  • Must be a full-time regular faculty member, as required by Article 10.7 of the Collective Agreement.
Responsibilities
  • Collaborate and coordinate with department faculty and deans in planning, developing, approving, and implementing new curriculum, including consultation with advisory committees and affected college areas.
  • Support and actively participate in reviewing, updating, and preparing curriculum proposals.
  • Present department curriculum changes to the DDC and Education Council.
  • Participate in program and curriculum review.
  • Support the Dean in creating and implementing strategic and operational plans for departments.
  • Assist with developing and implementing the College’s Strategic and Academic plans.
  • Represent the Division to other academic departments, divisions, and support areas of the College.
  • Represent the College, Division, Department, or faculty on external committees, meetings, projects, organizations, or public functions.
  • Participate in college promotional events and meetings, including alumni events and open houses, on and off campus.
  • Participate in developing, revising, and implementing College policies, guidelines, and procedures, and advise faculty and academic leaders on their application.
  • Communicate and coordinate information, decisions, concerns, and responsibilities with other division and department chairs, and contribute to college committees.
  • Participate in special committees and projects involving strategic, academic, and integrated planning, facilities usage and budgeting, and programming.
  • Identify and develop activities and events that meet the needs of the College, departments, and students.
  • Identify opportunities and recommend improvements to college business processes.
  • Communicate and consult with the division regarding special projects, funding opportunities, policy revisions, and college initiatives.
  • Hold division meetings.
  • Advise the Dean on emerging issues.
  • Encourage strategic and academic innovation and cooperation within and between departments.
  • Advocate for departments and faculty members as appropriate.
  • Approve course schedules, instructional workload assignments, vacation schedules, and non-instructional duty schedules for faculty.
  • Review non-instructional duty plans and approve non-instructional duty reports for faculty.
  • Ensure that program advisory committees operate in accordance with College policy.
  • Monitor enrolments during registration and adjust course offerings with the Dean and department chairs as needed.
  • Address student complaints, grade appeals, and student and faculty issues in accordance with College policies.
  • Serve on appeal committees arising from college policy.
  • Maintain faculty office inventory and work with Department Chairs to assign offices.
  • Work with the Dean to oversee departmental budgeting, resource allocation, and financial management.
  • Plan, recommend, and determine priorities for capital expenditures with the Deans and Department Chairs.
  • Track and approve professional development fund expenses forwarded by Department Chairs.
  • Plan, recommend, and monitor annual department section plans and ensure faculty appointments reflect those plans.
  • Approve departmental expenses, reimbursements, and timesheets as required.
  • Support department recruiting plans and participate in department selection recommendation and faculty evaluation committees.
  • Ensure selection committee procedures comply with the Collective Agreement and monitor their operation.
  • Recommend hiring decisions and recommend initial step placement of new faculty to the Dean.
  • Ensure faculty evaluation procedures are implemented and monitor those procedures.
  • Support Department Chairs in monitoring faculty evaluations and recommend remedial action plans to the Dean.
  • Initiate selection of Department Chairs, Assistant Chairs, and Coordinators and forward appointment recommendations to the Dean.
  • Facilitate orientation, mentoring, and training for the Division Chair successor.
  • Support and provide orientation and ongoing development for department chairs and coordinators.
  • Facilitate informal resolution of employee conflicts and disputes and participate in formal resolution processes where appropriate.
  • Approve and recommend faculty and staff leave requests in accordance with policy and Collective Agreements.
  • Act for other Division Chairs in their absence.
  • Advise and support Department Chairs, in consultation with Human Resources, regarding appropriate supports and college resources for faculty and staff concerns affecting assigned duties.
  • Participate with the Academic Administrative Manager in hiring, evaluating, and supervising the Division Assistant.
  • Serve as the Division Chairs’ Office Manager on a semester rotational basis.
