Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in IT or related field and ten years of relevant IT experience with servers and networks, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • A valid Georgia driver's license and an insurable driving record is required as the position may involve operation of University vehicles.
  • Must reside in the state of Georgia.

Responsibilities
  • Manage and maintain the dedicated network infrastructure and computer systems supporting the university's research mission.
  • Design, plan, implement, troubleshoot, and maintain research network systems, infrastructure, and architecture.
  • Perform troubleshooting, testing, scripting, and coding.
  • Provide leadership and mentoring to less-experienced engineers.
  • Design, plan, test, install, and maintain integrated research infrastructure, including network, storage, security systems, and other research-related cyberinfrastructure using hybrid and cloud methodologies.
  • Implement and maintain network, security, and computer systems to meet current and future research network requirements.
  • Administer and oversee the Science DMZ and high-performance research network infrastructure.
  • Test new designs and communications protocols in the laboratory to determine viability.
  • Design and evaluate advanced research network and systems troubleshooting methodologies and ensure tools and processes are in place for resolving complex technical issues.
  • Provide network and systems technical assistance and recommendations for successful application implementations.
  • Research, implement, create, administer, and modify custom network-services monitoring and management applications across server and service technologies.
  • Participate in the administration, design, and troubleshooting of core research network services, applications, and configuration items.
  • Track multiple advanced and complex systems, including Slurm, Globus, ESnet Science DMZ, and parallel file systems, to maintain a network engineered for science and research applications.
  • Maintain knowledge of industry best practices, solution methodologies, and emerging technology trends and recommend system adoptions.
  • Manage complex science and research infrastructure projects and provide technical leadership for cross-departmental service strategies involving internetworking technologies and associated systems.
  • Inspect network protocols, packets, and layers to resolve technical and mission-critical application production issues.
  • Assist with complex system documentation and troubleshooting of science and research network services.
  • Collaborate with architects to implement or create new technical services for advanced and complex problems and transition them to operational status.
  • Assist researchers, department managers, directors, and information technology peers with the adoption, optimization, and enhancement of network services for science and research.
  • Serve as the primary network-services point of contact for the university's science and research community.
  • Provide campus outreach regarding science and research support services, including communications about outages and changes.
  • Meet with architecture management and team members to identify new and evolving science and research network needs.
  • Ensure services are properly documented and staff are ready to take operational responsibility during service transition.
  • Create, champion, and use documentation systems to track and manage science and research network-service resources across multiple platforms.
  • Work with vendors and vendor documentation to understand new product capabilities and condense information for internal documents and team discussions.
  • Work with information technology partners and external vendors to troubleshoot infrastructure problems and minimize downtime.
  • Articulate problems and proposed solutions and apply judgment in implementing hardware and software methodologies, processes, and practices to ensure resilience, maintainability, and security.
  • Investigate and recommend technologies serving the future needs of the science and research network.
  • Analyze application-system trends to design network architecture for replacing obsolete systems and improving network efficiency.
  • Monitor new standards and networking technologies dedicated to science and research.
  • Ensure science and research infrastructure is implemented, monitored, and supported for appropriate availability and reliability.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor policies, procedures, and processes within assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Plan and recommend changes to the technology infrastructure.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
