Requirements
  • 5+ years experience working with and analyzing hardware for aerospace or similar environments
  • Practical and theoretical expertise in several of the following disciplines: Thermodynamics and all forms of heat transfer, External flow aerodynamics and aerothermodynamics in flight regimes from subsonic to hypersonic, Internal flow dynamics of liquid, gas, and multi-phase flow, Structural analysis of components with thermal-induced loads
  • Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis tools at several levels of fidelity
  • Experience developing scripting tools to automate analysis and data reduction workflows (Python preferred)
  • Proficiency in analyzing multi-phase fluid flow and heat transfer (experience with cryogenics preferred)
  • Familiarity with thermal control systems for the space environment
  • Experience developing thermal-fluid loads derived from literature, CFD, or test data.
  • Experience with 1D system models (e.g., SINDA/FLUENT), 3D FEA thermal/fluid modeling tools (e.g., Thermal Desktop), Python, and Simulink.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering, or similar
Responsibilities
  • Build system-level models of launch and reentry vehicles to define vehicle loads and performance in one or more of the following areas: vehicle aerodynamics, aerothermal loads, component and cavity thermal environments, propulsion system thermodynamic performance, or pressurized system thermal/structural combined loads
  • Perform engineering analysis to trade and down select competing vehicle designs
  • Select and design materials for thermal protection of structural components
  • Collaborate with hardware design engineers and other analysts on component and subsystem analysis of mechanical, fluid, and propulsion components with combined fluid flow, thermal, and structural load conditions
  • Execute test campaigns to characterize new materials and designs
  • Communicate design details and requirements to hardware designers
  • Review test and flight data to anchor models, troubleshoot problems, and propose design changes
Desired Qualifications
  • 10+ years experience working with and analyzing hardware for aerospace or similar environments
  • Experience with thermal or thermodynamic analysis and flight data reduction for vehicles operating on-orbit (upper stages or spacecraft)
  • Basic proficiency with Computer Aided Design (CAD) software (NX, Solidworks, or equivalent)
  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or similar
