- Graduate from an approved Surgical Technologist program.
- Hold National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting Certification or National Center for Competency Testing certification.
- Hold a Medical Technician License from the State of New Hampshire unless another current New Hampshire state license is held.
- Hold Basic Life Support certification.
- Have knowledge of medical terminology.
Responsibilities
- Don operating room attire and personal protective equipment.
- Gather, check, and open supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure.
- Perform the surgical scrub and don gowns and gloves.
- Set up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications or solutions needed for the procedure.
- Perform initial instrument, sharps, and sponge counts with the circulator.
- Assist team members with gowning and gloving.
- Assist with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field.
- Participate in surgical site and patient verification during the time-out procedure.
- Secure tubing, cords, and other sterile accessories.
- Prepare and anticipate additional instrumentation, equipment, and supplies needed during the procedure.
- Anticipate the surgeon’s needs by passing instruments and supplies during the procedure.
- Measure and pass medications, hemostatic agents, and irrigation solutions used during the surgical procedure.
- Hold retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.
- Sponge or suction the operative site.
- Apply electrocautery to clamps or forceps on bleeders held by the surgeon.
- Cut suture material as directed by the surgeon.
- Maintain the highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.
- Recognize early warning signs and respond appropriately when a situation begins to deteriorate.
- Perform additional counts as necessary.
- Prepare sterile dressings and immobilization devices.
- Prepare and pass off specimens as appropriate.
- Submit, document, and transport specimens as needed, ensuring accurate patient labeling with the patient’s medical record number and date of birth.
- Clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization.
- Assist other team members with terminal cleaning of the room.
- Assist in preparing the operating room for the next patient.
- Participate in debriefing and quality-improvement practices to ensure quality patient care.
- Perform cystoscopy and assemble or disassemble scopes when required.
- White-balance the camera and connect fluid tubing to the scope.
- Support emergency hysterectomy, postpartum hemorrhage management, dilation and curettage, dilation and evacuation, cerclage, vaginal laceration repairs, and postpartum salpingectomies.
- Maintain operating rooms in a safe and efficient condition and ensure constant readiness for use.
- Assist with transferring patients to another unit or department by bed, wheelchair, or other assistive modality as requested.
- Participate in admitting patients in the electronic medical record, bringing patients to the room, and orienting patients to their surroundings.
- Maintain and clean equipment and instrumentation and ensure that they are in working condition.
- Maintain an orderly work area and keep hallways clear of excess equipment.
- Set up delivery tables using sterile technique.
- Clean and remove instruments, assist in breaking down delivery tables, and place specimens in appropriate locations.
- Maintain established par levels of patient-care supplies in patient rooms and medication rooms.
- Ensure completion of the daily task list.

- An Associate’s degree is preferred.
