United Dental (UDC) helps independent dental practitioners grow and monetize their practices by acting as a dental partner organization (DPO). It offers a modular suite of services that cover back-office management, access to preferential pricing across the dental supply chain, and many opportunities to connect with peers to share best practices. Its product works through integrated solutions: data and analytics to guide decisions, end-to-end clinical support, and practice-optimization insights that aim to cut costs and improve performance. Unlike some competitors, UDC lets dentists benefit from the buying power and scale typically enjoyed by larger groups without giving up autonomy over their practice. The company's goal is to enable independent dentists to run more profitable, well-supported practices while maintaining control over their clinical and business decisions.

What believers are saying

  • UDC raised a $5 million Series B in 2021 led by High Speed Ventures.
  • UDC added Allan Weinstein to its board on July 1, 2024, strengthening PE expertise.
  • UDC expanded into Tennessee in March 2024, signaling continued geographic acquisition momentum.

What critics are saying

  • Patel v. United Dental Corp. stayed for arbitration after a December 16, 2024 retaliation lawsuit.
  • California settlement materials allege unlicensed dentistry and false advertising across 2010-2019 locations.
  • UDC still relies on fragmented-practice rollups; one failed integration or debt squeeze slows acquisitions.

What makes United Dental unique

  • UDC’s DPO model lets dentists keep autonomy while accessing DSO-scale back-office infrastructure.
  • UDC integrates financial management, accounting, data analytics, payroll, and HR across partner practices.
  • UDC’s 98% retention claim in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada supports its partnership pitch.
