Requirements
  • Current Category 16, 17, or 18 Exempt Employee in Class 7395 who has worked at least 2,080 hours in class 7395.
  • Successful completion of a recognized Iron Worker Apprenticeship Program of 3 years and 3 years of verifiable journey-level experience as an ornamental iron worker.
  • A combination of 8 years of verifiable training and experience as an ornamental iron worker, including 3 years at the journey level.
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license; selected applicants must be insurable and maintain insurability under the department's automobile liability insurance policy.
  • Ability and physical stamina to climb and work from ladders at varying heights up to 220 feet, work on scaffolds and mechanical high-lifts, stoop and crawl into confined spaces, operate equipment, lift and carry 50 pounds, and work in inclement weather and potentially hazardous environments under controlled conditions.
  • Ability to pass a medical qualification examination for respirator use and wear face-fitting respiratory protection.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools and arc welding equipment, including oxyacetylene, metal inert gas, and tungsten inert gas welding.
  • Some positions may require a valid California Class B driver's license, welding certification, and/or experience installing or maintaining steel rolling doors.
Responsibilities
  • Fabricate, install, dismantle, maintain, and repair structural members, steel rolling doors, chain-link fences, fire escapes, drop ladders, handrails, guardrails, ornamental iron gates, and other metal structures.
  • Install and repair steel rolling doors, including removing and replacing damaged steel slats, guides, and rolling-door operating gear.
  • Fabricate new parts.
  • Install and repair chain-link fences and gates and prepare labor and material cost estimates when required.
  • Install and service steel and aluminum sash.
  • Install and service fire escapes and inspect drop ladders.
  • Fabricate and install, or repair when damaged, handrails, guardrails, and play equipment.
  • Fabricate and install ornamental iron gates, fences, and window grilles.
  • Fabricate and install rebar.
  • Perform arc, acetylene, and metal inert gas welding.
  • Maintain shop equipment and order and maintain records of materials and supplies.
  • Drive city vehicles to transport personnel, tools, equipment, and supplies to changing job sites and perform other job duties.
  • Provide work direction to subordinate personnel when assigned.
