Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent GED is required.
  • Graduation from a specialty training program is preferred.
  • No prior experience is needed; comprehensive on-the-job training is provided.
  • A minimum of one year of related work experience is preferred, not required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required within six months.
  • The employee must meet qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range of the assigned clinical area.
  • The employee must perform work in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, practices, and job-specific obligations.
Responsibilities
  • Facilitate activities of daily living, including hygiene, toileting, mobility, meals, and changing linens.
  • Collect vital signs and daily weights.
  • Perform point-of-care patient testing, instrument maintenance, and quality control.
  • Turn and reposition patients.
  • Perform equipment checks and exchanges.
  • Provide advanced dressing care and suctioning.
  • Remove Foley catheters and peripheral intravenous lines.
  • Remove nasogastric tubes and perform nasal swabs.
  • Check code carts and oxygen storage cabinets.
  • Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
  • Handle the storage, preparation, and delivery of breast milk and infant and pediatric formulas.
  • Document patient care and observations accurately in the medical record.
  • Identify, observe, and document patient physical needs and report changes in condition to licensed personnel.
  • Obtain, maintain, process, and transport specimens according to policy, procedure, physician orders, and laboratory requirements.
  • Provide one-to-one patient safety watch as assigned.
  • Assist with equipment and supply troubleshooting and corrective measures.
  • Perform clerical duties for admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths.
  • Facilitate patient throughput activities and transcribe and process orders according to unit standards.
  • Release and confirm ordered tests to appropriate departments.
  • Coordinate patient transportation to multiple tests.
  • Obtain and communicate electronic information for the nursing unit, including scheduling tests and faxing consultations.
  • Assist with ordering stationery, floor-stock, patient-care, and nursing supplies.
  • Operate and troubleshoot clerical equipment and coordinate maintenance for computers, fax machines, and phones.
  • Transport non-controlled medications within the clinic or unit and to and from Pharmacy as needed.
  • Transport blood products to and from the Blood Bank as needed.
  • Make discharge follow-up phone calls and coordinate virtual discharge appointments.
  • Support staff with five-minute drills and quality rounds and participate in regulatory readiness activities.
  • Serve as a preceptor and mentor for new staff and students.
  • Work 20 hours weekly on night shifts, including 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. shifts, every other weekend, and holidays.
  • Complete the required two-week classroom orientation at the start of employment, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
