FSU to invest $1.7B in Tallahassee hospital to create academic health centre

Tallahassee City Commission has approved transferring city-owned hospital assets to Florida State University, marking a historic step towards creating FSU Health, a full academic health centre. The agreement includes an FSU investment of $1.7 billion. The transformation will combine research, clinical care and teaching to bring healthcare innovation and cutting-edge medical advances to residents across North Florida. The move aims to reduce the need for Tallahassee citizens to travel for healthcare whilst attracting patients from outside the region. The transfer represents the culmination of a multi-stage public process, evolving from the hospital's origins as a municipally established community facility. The agreement includes safeguards, deed restrictions and bondholder protections whilst preserving the hospital's public mission and charity care commitments.

Tallahassee hospital first in world to deploy AeroShield radiation protection in cath lab

Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare has become the first hospital globally to deploy AeroShield, a table-mounted inflatable radiation protection device developed by Salus Scientific. The technology aims to reduce radiation exposure for physicians, nurses and technologists working in catheterisation laboratories. AeroShield provides scatter radiation attenuation for entire cath lab teams whilst maintaining patient access and workflow efficiency. Interventional cardiologist Dr William Dixon performed the first clinical procedure using the device. TMH will serve as an early implementation site, working with Salus Scientific to evaluate real-world performance. The hospital is also adopting Salus Scientific's GLiFT and PeRM technologies as part of a comprehensive occupational wellness programme. GLiFT reduces orthopedic strain from protective aprons, whilst PeRM provides real-time personal dosimetry monitoring.
