Requirements
  • Current full, unrestricted Registered Nursing license in Alaska or other U.S. state required.
  • Direct Hire must have applied for an Alaska nursing license before start date. Agency staff must have an active Alaska license.
  • Must have Basic Life Support until obtaining Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation Program on hire. If not on hire, must be obtained within six months of hire date.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Clinical Competency required within three months of hire and every three years.
  • High Risk Competency required within three months of hire and every year.
  • One year’s clinical nurse experience preferred.
  • Prior experience in specialty is preferred.
  • Knowledge of nursing care principles, practices, diagnosis, and processes to provide professional nursing care to patients.
  • Competency to recognize adverse signs and symptoms and act promptly in emergency situations.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceuticals, their desired effects, side effects, and complications in their use.
  • Skills to apply scientific principles in operating and monitoring of basic and specialized medical equipment (for example, defibrillator, gastric and thoracic suction, EKG machines).
  • Proficient in nursing procedures and basic nursing care.
  • Oral and written communication skills, ability to enter and retrieve patient data accurately, and verbally communicate findings with the healthcare team.
  • Ability to provide guidance, leadership, and work cooperatively with others by establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, and other healthcare team members.
  • Ability to implement appropriate nursing therapeutic interventions based on the knowledge of a wide variety of nursing diagnosis, medical and psychosocial disorders, the normal course of disease and anticipated complications.
  • Regularly required to talk or hear; stand, walk, sit; use hands; lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Current certifications: Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support, Basic Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation Program, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and state Registered Nurse license.
Responsibilities
  • Plans, coordinates, and completes patient care on C-section post-surgical and obstetrics unit; closely monitors patients returning from surgery; provides total patient care from post-surgical recovery to discharge, including teaching and self-care demonstrations.
  • Labor and Delivery, Postpartum and Neonatal Nursing; provides focused 1:1 care during labor, including nursing/medical interventions, vaginal exams, comfort measures, pain relief and labor coaching.
  • Monitors, interprets, and documents electronic fetal heart rate tracing using current NICHD terminology and performs scheduled non-stress tests.
  • Cares for high-risk maternal or neonatal patients, stabilizes and prepares patients for transfer to a tertiary care facility.
  • Offers breastfeeding support, teaching, and breastfeeding consultations.
  • Triages obstetric calls and unscheduled outpatients to ensure safe, timely provision of care.
  • Assists physicians with bedside procedures, pelvic exams and OB-related procedures.
  • Performs well-baby checks.
  • Supervises and delegates to certified nursing assistants and housekeeping staff.
  • Seeks continuing education to maintain current standards in fetal heart monitoring; complies with ACOG standards of care.
  • Completes nursing assessments using the nursing process and conducts comprehensive patient assessments across pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations.
  • Imparts educational knowledge to develop skills to enhance decision making and promote understanding; organizes and participates in patient care conferences; develops and implements educational programs for the department; documents education; provides discharge information; participate in in-services.
  • Communicates with staff, patients, and families; assists in orientation of new staff; guides others in nursing interventions; follows policies and procedures; supports Nursing Services mission; acts as Contact Registered Nurse leading RNs, LPNs, and CNAs.
  • Develops and contributes to a plan of nursing action; transcribes physician orders accurately; initiates patient care plans; coordinates with healthcare team; documents reassessments; writes PIER or SOAPE notes; gives shift report.
  • Performs other duties as assigned; will take call as assigned; attends and participates in department staff meetings; participates in unit goal setting; completes annual competencies and maintains licensures and certifications.
