Library Project Manager

Description

The Library Project Manager will oversee a large-scale, on-site inventory and catalog verification initiative at a major research library in Richmond, VA. This full-time position plays a critical leadership role in ensuring the accuracy, organization, and preservation of a significant and high-use library collection.

The Project Manager will supervise multiple teams of Library Technicians and Lead Library Technicians as they carry out a comprehensive retrospective inventory of library materials. Core responsibilities include developing workflows, assigning and monitoring tasks, and ensuring all project phases remain on track and within established timelines. The work involves verifying bibliographic records, barcoding and linking items to catalog entries, and rehousing fragile materials to ensure long-term accessibility and care.

This position requires on-site work in Richmond, VA.

Responsibilities

• Develop and manage the overall project plan, timelines, and deliverables
• Lead a team of library technicians to ensure consistent, high-quality production
• Establish workflows and procedures to efficiently retrieve, inventory, barcode, and rehouse library materials
• Monitor progress and adjust plans as needed to ensure project milestones are met
• Serve as the primary point of quality assurance and coordinate quality control reviews by team leaders
• Provide supervision, training, and ongoing support to staff
• Conduct regular team meetings and maintain communication with stakeholders regarding project status and challenges
• Review staff work to ensure standards compliance and provide corrective feedback as needed.
• Liaise with library staff about workflows, quality control, production
• Compile regular progress reports, identifying risks, issues, and recommendations for continuous improvement

Requirements

• Master’s degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited institution not required but strongly preferred
• At least 3 years in library inventory management using an ILS to track large collections (at least 500,000 volumes)
• Demonstrated supervisory or project management experience within a library setting
• Demonstrated experience with monitoring the work of others for quality and productivity
• Ability to address staff performance issues
• Proficiency with integrated library systems; Ex Libris Alma strongly preferred
• Knowledge of the Library of Congress Cataloging system
• Careful attention to detail and the ability to generate statistical reports using Excel
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Ability to work with staff ranging from entry level technicians to senior staff

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience managing large-scale cataloging or metadata remediation projects
• Familiarity with government document cataloging and classification schemes
• Certification or coursework in project management (e.g., PMP, Agile, PRINCE2)

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork. 
• Occasionally lifting of items weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds such as files, books, and other materials.
