Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree in the humanities, preferably in English or Art History.
  • At least 7 years of relevant publishing experience, preferably including 4 years in an art publishing or museum environment.
  • Proven copyediting and proofreading skills and excellent knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft products, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneDrive, and collaboration tools such as Zoom and DocuSign.
  • Substantial knowledge of art history and visual culture.
  • Demonstrated excellence in project management.
  • Ability to interact professionally with various stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to adapt to changes and shifting priorities while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Los Angeles residency is required.
Responsibilities
  • Identify, generate, and recommend new book publishing opportunities based on organizational priorities, working with potential authors to develop viable project proposals and prepare sample materials.
  • Negotiate contracts with authors, agents, packagers, and freelance consultants.
  • Provide editorial project management for print and digital publications for a wide range of audiences and levels of complexity.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in Design, Production, and Rights to establish schedules and track progress against schedules and budgets.
  • Ensure the high quality of work performed by consultants, including peer reviewers, translators, project editors, copyeditors, proofreaders, and indexers.
  • Maintain project records and regularly report on project status.
  • Supervise the peer review process by soliciting and contracting reviewers, evaluating reviews, and working with authors to address concerns.
  • Work with Rights Coordinators to ensure that illustrations can be acquired and transmitted according to schedule.
  • Serve as a resource for developing budgets and publication specifications in the book project approval process.
  • Perform editorial functions including proposal pitches and acquisitions, developmental editing, copyediting, and proofreading from concept through transmittal.
  • Oversee freelance contractors and assist with the training and development of junior staff and the freelance pool.
  • Perform editorial development tasks including strategic idea development and acquisition, peer review, project approval, manuscript development, text editing, and transmittal of manuscripts and illustration programs to the Design and Production team.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Master's degree.
  • Reading knowledge or familiarity with one or more European languages.
  • At least 4 years of experience in an art publishing or museum environment.
