Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • The candidate must hold one of the following credentials: Registered Health Information Technician, Registered Health Information Administrator, Certified Coding Specialist, Certified Coding Specialist – Physician Based, Certified Professional Coder, Certified Inpatient Coder, Certified Outpatient Coder, Certified Interventional Radiology Cardiovascular Coder, Radiology Certified Coder, or Radiation Oncology Certified Coder.
  • Two years of coding experience are required.
  • Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except where legal requirements such as a license, certification, or registration apply.
Responsibilities
  • Identify all billable services, regardless of the location where they were rendered, that require professional fee billing as determined jointly by UW Physicians and the clinical department.
  • Review applicable data sources, including EPIC, ORCA, and Mindscape, for new admissions, transfers, discharges, expirations, ambulatory procedures, ambulatory visits, and other potential sources of billable services.
  • Access and review available electronic or other appropriate information to identify billable services requiring professional fee billing.
  • Request patient medical charts for non-electronic providers when necessary.
  • Code all documented professional services using the appropriate Current Procedural Terminology and International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision codes.
  • Ensure coded services, provider charges, and medical record documentation meet appropriate guidelines or standards.
  • Review and resolve coding denials and coding claim edits in Epic daily as part of routine operations.
  • Consult with physicians as appropriate to verify services rendered and documented.
  • Provide feedback to help physicians understand coding and documentation issues and opportunities.
  • Assist physicians and their representatives with questions about professional fees.
