Requirements
  • At least 1 year of software engineering experience building systems close to hardware; exceptional new graduates with strong project or internship experience may apply.
  • Strong programming fundamentals in at least one of Rust, C++, or Python, with a solid understanding of operating systems and multithreading.
  • Experience building production systems, internal tools, student-team projects, or personal projects that worked.
  • Experience debugging timing, concurrency, or hardware issues, including in a project setting.
  • Ability to work on-site in San Francisco five days per week, or six days per week if needed during crunch time.
Responsibilities
  • Ship performance-critical code to real robots daily.
  • Learn the full data flow from camera frames through perception and planning to control commands, actuator feedback, and the systems that carry them.
  • Contribute to the real-time control loop and help keep high-rate control running deterministically alongside vision inference.
  • Build parts of the perception data path to move high-bandwidth camera streams into computer vision and machine learning models with minimal latency and zero silent drops.
  • Reduce latency and tighten the stack to make the system faster, more deterministic, and more reliable.
  • Build tooling and instrumentation that make real-time behavior across controls and vision observable and debuggable.
Desired Qualifications
  • Linux kernel or embedded systems experience.
  • Exposure to build and test infrastructure including Bazel, Nix, hardware-in-the-loop testing, or continuous integration and continuous delivery.
  • Experience with real-time control systems, including motor control, high-rate control loops, or robot controllers.
  • Computer vision pipeline experience, including camera drivers, image transport, GPU inference, or sensor synchronization.
  • Tracing and profiling experience with ftrace, flamegraphs, or eBPF.
  • Comfort using artificial intelligence tools to multiply personal output.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Fast prototype cycles support near-term productized pilot programs.
  • Large data-center builders offer a credible path to early deployments.
  • Onshore manufacturing strengthens compliance, procurement, and domestic supply support.

What critics are saying

  • Pilot conversion failure leaves Gradient without revenue or customer proof.
  • Unitree and Tesla pressure pricing, speed, and manufacturing scale.
  • Full-stack execution creates cascading failures across hardware, software, ML, and manufacturing.

What makes Gradient Robotics unique

  • Full-stack robotics ownership spans hardware, software, models, and manufacturing.
  • Targets industrial deployments in data centers and factories, not consumer robotics.
  • Positions as American-made humanoid robots for general-purpose physical work.
