Requirements
  • Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as a Physician Assistant or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an APRN as noted below.
  • Physician Assistant license types: AGPNP/ANP (Adult Gerontology Primary Care NP or Adult NP) or FNP (Family NP) or RNFA (Registered Nurse First Assistant) is REQUIRED for NP candidates.
  • All certifications must be current and complete prior to start date: Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • DHEC and DEA license applications must be started prior to first day.
  • APRNs/PA must maintain licenses, certifications, CNEs/CMEs, etc. as required by applicable policies and state law.
  • Preferred Experience: At least 2 years of spine/neurosurgery First Assist NP/PA-C experience is preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Provides direct care to patients through taking comprehensive histories and performing physical examinations; Evaluates and treats based on history, physical examination, radiological, laboratory, and other diagnostic test results pursuant to the practice agreement or scope of practice guideline.
  • Initiates referrals to other health care providers, and/or consults with the attending physician or the collaborating physician.
  • Documents and bills for direct care provided.
  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice.
  • Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research.
  • Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
  • Potential to precept students at MUSC enrolled as an advanced practice provider student; and facilitates the learning of other new team members.
  • Manage all outpatient needs for a large volume of patients with neurosurgical problems including assessment, diagnosis, and management; recognize and assess changes in patient status and respond appropriately; provide primary and specialized care to spine and other neurosurgery patients; analyze, interpret and prioritize subjective and objective patient data; manage independent patient load and bill for services; be available to assess add-ons in clinic; formulate and implement critical pathways to standardize care.
  • Plan, advocate and maximize use of operating room block time; prepare surgical posting slips and submit paperwork for case posting; coordinate with Pre-Cert Office/CVU for pre-authorization of surgical cases.
  • Triages outpatient phone calls and coordinates paperwork in support of direct patient care; communicate with family members; provide patient care support and follow up to ensure coordinated communication; provide clinical instruction and oversight to nursing staff; ensure communication with referring physicians; work with hospital nursing team, residents, interns, inpatient APPs, etc. to provide care through discharge and follow up.
  • Work with support staff and central offices to maximize clinic scheduling efficiency; document all patient care activities in EPIC; attend departmental Case Management and M&M conferences; maintain current license.
  • Collaborate with other first assist care team members and physicians; perform as first assist with Neurosurgery/Spine; other duties as assigned.
