- A high school diploma, GED, or 10 years of work experience is required.
- One year of health care experience is required.
- Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification is required within 90 days of employment.
- The role requires constant standing and walking; frequent oral communication, hearing, lifting or carrying and pushing or pulling objects weighing 0-25 pounds, reaching, gripping, keyboard use and data entry, and near and far vision with color discrimination; occasional bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, sitting, squatting, repetitive foot, leg, hand and arm movements, distance and spatial-relationship judgment, lifting or carrying and pushing or pulling objects weighing 25-50 pounds, moving patients, detecting odors, and driving.
- Assist eye care providers with the examination and treatment of patients.
- Prepare patients for eye examinations and procedures.
- Initiate documentation of the patient's chief complaint, history of present illness, review of systems, and pertinent ocular findings.
- Perform preliminary and provider-requested testing, including visual acuity, color vision, lensometry, keratometry, pupil-function testing, tonometry, automated perimetry, extra-ocular muscle evaluation, confrontation visual field testing, refraction, optical coherence tomography, fundus photography, and other patient services.
- Act as a scribe by documenting clinically relevant patient-visit interactions, including history and examination, diagnoses, orders, evaluation and management, follow-up, and patient instructions.
- Provide patient education on eye health, medications, and post-procedure care under the direction of an eye-care provider.
- Assist with minor surgery procedures and office laser treatments, including applying and removing dressings as directed.
- Maintain and clean ophthalmic instruments and equipment.
- Inventory and maintain surgical instruments according to system and department standards.
- Screen patients and calls for emergency or urgent situations and obtain pertinent information for the provider.
- Maintain accurate medical records in the electronic medical record system.
- Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant certification is strongly preferred, or willingness to obtain it within 18 months of hire.
- Previous experience in an ophthalmology or optometry setting is a plus.
