How You’ll Make an Impact:
As a Principal Engineer for the Core Platform group, you will own the vision and strategy of the technology of the shared services platform that will be used across ecobee and Generac divisions. This group will be responsible for developing and maintaining shared services that will allow creating a unified experience for our customers within an IoT paradigm of connected devices and smart homes. You will use leading edge technologies to innovate, and own the design, maintenance and development of complex and large software solutions that meets the customer needs and that directly impact ecobee’s success. You will collaborate with other principal Engineers to deliver the enterprise level strategy and long-term investments of engineering team with alignment to the business goals.
Reporting to the VP of Engineering, you will participate in growing the engineering maturity and culture to ensure we are creating an amazing work environment that everyone can thrive in and effectively deliver high quality software. You will work closely with Engineering Leadership and partner with Product Management, UX Design and Data leadership to deliver software product that support company strategies.
This role is open to being 100% remote within Canada although our home office is in Toronto, Ontario. You may be required to travel to Toronto, Canada once per quarter for team and/or company events.
What You’ll Bring to the Table:
- You like to continuously challenge yourself and status quo by finding new and better ways to solve complex problems. Systems design and architecture are in your comfort zone
- You don’t mind learning new technologies if it means getting you there sooner
- The bigger the challenge, the better. You want to fearlessly dive into issues of scale, concurrency, massive data sets, security, redundancy, fail over, and everything else you imagine a successful IoT company would need to consider
- You Identify and execute on significant company-wide opportunities by understanding how technical capabilities meet customer needs. You proactively work with business owners to help them understand these new capabilities and work with them to build the right roadmap for the business
- You execute large projects to a very high standards – e.g. against a tight deadline with significant consequences of failure, or to a standard of quality well exceeding that of the current system.
- You own the health and technical debt backlog for the overseen software assets
- You master and are a proponent of the craft of software development, automated testing, continuous integration and deployment, design patterns, etc.
- You are not only familiar with how to get your code "live", from getting it reviewed, merged, then deployed on the cloud or in a datacenter, but can see where improvements can be made. You believe in and rely on metrics to continuously assess and improve the services quality and working system efficiency
- The team is a priority for you, both in terms of your mentorship, support, and guidance but also in helping to ensure our efforts are directed to the places which have the most impact while protecting team well-being
- Excellent communication skills, especially written. This is how you best bring everyone along a journey together with clear, shared understanding
- Just so you know: The hired candidate will be required to complete a background check.

What happens after you apply:
Application review. It will happen. By an actual person in Talent Acquisition. As we sometimes get upwards of 100+ applications for some roles, it can take a few days, but every applicant can expect a note regarding their application status.
Interview Process.
- A 30-40 minute phone/video call with a member in Talent Acquisition
- A 30-minute interview with the VP of Engineering as the hiring manager. This round will focus on understanding your past experience, your motivation, you learning about your potential manager and their leadership style
- Next is a cross functional team interview where you meet with multiple folks from engineering, product, and analytics. This will be 4 hours but not continuous.
- Finally, you’ll present a take home case study to the same folks you met during the earlier interviews. This round will be no longer than 90 minutes.

Our people are empowered to take ownership of their schedules with workflows that allow for flexible hours. Based on your job, you have an option of office, hybrid or fully remote work.
