Requirements
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • One year of recent experience within the past five years providing patient care in an intensive care unit or similar setting; one year of recent OHSU Lift Team experience in the ICU setting may substitute.
  • Complete 12-lead electrocardiogram, capillary blood glucose quality-control compliance, and rehabilitation training within six months of hire.
  • For positions involving personal patient care, obtain a Basic Life Support certificate within 30 days of hire or before independent practice, whichever comes first.
Responsibilities
  • Perform direct and indirect patient-care tasks under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and as directed by the department nurse manager.
  • Maintain patient-care areas and clean equipment and areas in conjunction with environmental services.
  • Keep dirty utility rooms clean and free of debris and excess supplies.
  • Distribute linen and supplies; restock gloves, patient rooms, and carts as needed.
  • Transport specimens, equipment, medications, and patients by wheelchair or stretcher to locations within the hospital.
  • Answer and transfer calls on multiple phone lines.
  • Monitor equipment operation and report broken or missing equipment according to organizational standards.
  • Order, inventory, and maintain equipment and supplies.
  • Communicate data reflecting patients’ status and delegated tasks to the Registered Nurse or licensed independent practitioner in charge of care.
  • Observe infection-prevention guidelines and provide for patient safety, including maintaining bed, side rails, call lights, and items within reach and identifying hazards.
  • Respond to call lights and provide comfort measures such as blankets and pillows.
  • Greet visitors and family members and provide information within unit-defined standards.
  • Assist registered nurses, physicians, and other healthcare team members as needed.
  • Assist with activities of daily living, including incontinence care, immediate toileting needs, bathing, and feeding patients when asked.
  • Pass out food trays as needed.
  • Empty Foley bags.
  • Assist with quality-assurance activities for the intensive care unit.
  • Support patients, families, visitors, nursing staff, and other support staff in delivering care in a safe and comfortable environment.
