Requirements
  • A Bachelor’s degree in nursing and a current nursing license are required.
  • At least 3 years of clinical care experience caring for patients, anticipating their needs, and understanding the physician’s plan of care is required.
  • Experience collaborating with physicians and their designees is required.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to make informed decisions are required.
  • Extensive knowledge of clinical operations and patient flow is required.
  • The ability to synthesize large volumes of information and communicate concisely verbally or in writing is required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, and OneNote, is required.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Professional, email, fax machines, copy machines, and internet browsers is required.
  • Proficiency in typing is required.
  • Proficiency with technology, computer, and web applications is required, including the ability to multitask across applications, learn new applications quickly, and work with IHIS, Microsoft Office products, 3M, and payer websites and applications.
  • A current nursing license is required.
Responsibilities
  • Implement and support the philosophy, mission, values, standards, policies, and procedures of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team to secure complex pre-authorizations and prevent or appeal clinical denials.
  • Use clinical knowledge to interpret and apply medical-necessity guidelines to determine the appropriateness of provided services.
  • Determine the appropriate level of care, inpatient or observation, by reading, understanding, and interpreting documented clinical information.
  • Become a subject matter expert for assigned payers and governmental payer requirements and audits, including RAC, MAC, and QIO audits.
  • Maintain awareness of state and national healthcare trends, JCAHO requirements, CMS requirements, and third-party payer utilization-management guidelines.
  • Acquire and apply knowledge of managed care, scheduling, financial counseling, pre-certification, admissions/discharges/transfers, clinical workflows and documentation, revenue management, charge description master processes, coding, medical information management, release of information, case management, utilization management, clinical documentation improvement, compliance, legal, finance, transplant workflows, billing, follow-up, and cash posting.
  • Read, understand, and interpret payer remittance documents, denial and remark codes, and expected reimbursement to determine the cost-effectiveness of completing an appeal.
  • Troubleshoot problems, solve issues, continuously learn, and adapt to changing payer rules.
  • Work independently and collaborate closely with Legal, Medical Information Management, physician groups, and the Business Office.
