Requirements
  • No prior nursing experience is required; new graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Graduation from an accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Associate Degree in Nursing, or Nursing Diploma program is required.
  • Registered nurses without a Bachelor of Science in Nursing must enroll in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program within 2 years and complete it within 7 years of the start date.
  • Current registered nurse licensure with the North Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact registered nurse license is required; North Carolina licensure is required within 60 days of start.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • All Clinical Nurse I hires must complete the Duke University Health System Nurse Residency Program within 12 months.
  • Candidates must understand the nursing process and professional nursing practices.
  • Candidates must be able to assess and meet the needs of acute and chronically ill patients.
  • Candidates must be competent with computer systems and electronic documentation.
  • Candidates must meet physical requirements, including prolonged standing and walking.
  • Candidates must have working knowledge of infection control, safety protocols, and regulatory standards.
  • Candidates must be familiar with Joint Commission compliance.
  • Pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing is required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide and supervise direct and indirect nursing care using the nursing process, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Deliver advanced and specialized care aligned with the Duke University Health System Professional Practice Model.
  • Care for adult patients recovering from cardiothoracic procedures, including coronary artery bypass grafting, heart and lung transplants, valve repair or replacement, aortic and aneurysm repairs, lobectomies, and ventricular assist device therapy.
  • Serve as a resource and role model to other staff.
  • Participate in departmental committees, professional development, the Clinical Ladder Program, research initiatives, and quality improvement activities.
  • Promote and maintain a patient-centered environment prioritizing safety, respect, and exceptional service.
  • Deliver care consistent with the North Carolina Board of Nursing scope and regulatory requirements.
Desired Qualifications
  • Higher-level nursing certifications are preferred.
  • Professional nursing specialty certification is preferred.
