Requirements
  • Graduation from a Medical Imaging Program is required.
  • A current radiography license is required where mandated by the state board for the service location.
  • National certification as a Registered Radiography Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists is required according to the service location; Pennsylvania certification is required within six months of medical imaging program graduation.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required within 30 days of hire.
  • A state criminal background check and federal background check, if applicable, are required for regulated areas.
  • The ability to interact positively with patients, families, and members of the health care team is required.
  • The ability to prioritize and handle multiple situations simultaneously is required.
  • The ability to adapt positioning techniques, equipment manipulation, and accessory-device use when routine positioning is compromised by a patient's condition, age, or ability is required.
  • The ability to differentiate shades of gray and color on a monitor or photograph is required.
  • The ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods is required.
  • The ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds and carry items up to 20 pounds is required.
Responsibilities
  • Perform imaging and therapeutic services and associated patient care in support of the Radiology Department mission.
  • Rotate through diagnostic areas, including fluoroscopy, mobile imaging, routine imaging, the operating room, endoscopy, and orthopedics, to develop technical skills.
  • Perform imaging procedures based on patient assessment, service requests, and imaging protocols, with periodic image evaluation and supervision.
  • Produce optimal-quality images using imaging equipment and systems for image delivery and archiving.
  • Select exposure factors based on patient size, condition, and pathology while minimizing radiation exposure.
  • Minimize radiation exposure to self, patients, and other staff through shielding, collimation, application of the inverse square law, and minimizing repeat exposures.
  • Maintain expertise in anatomy, physiology, and pathology related to imaging to optimize procedures and patient care and safety.
  • Assess patient needs and provide imaging-related comfort, hygiene, range-of-motion assistance, and support.
  • Prepare contrast agents, specific pharmaceuticals, and sterile trays for imaging procedures according to guidelines and protocols.
  • Educate patients about radiographic procedures by explaining procedures and answering questions.
  • Interact positively with technical, support, nursing, and medical staff to promote a team approach to Radiology services.
  • Engage in problem solving, crisis management, systems implementation, and performance improvement throughout the hospital to support efficient, high-quality, cost-effective patient care.
  • Perform imaging techniques, patient care, and guest-relations duties in accordance with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Code of Ethics, hospital and department policies, state and federal regulations, and The Joint Commission guidelines.
  • Report equipment failures immediately upon identification.
  • Complete required in-services and competencies by their deadlines and apply the knowledge gained.
  • Position patients accurately according to established protocols.
  • Participate in coordinating daily workflow.
  • Provide limited instruction and clinical supervision to radiology students regarding patient positioning, technique selection, equipment manipulation, and accessory-device use in accordance with Radiology program policies and accrediting-body requirements.
  • Ensure that all vital components of the imaging process are completed in their entirety.
  • Perform assigned medical assisting duties.
  • Work in an environment involving minimal occupational radiation, airborne particles, bodily fluids, and imaging equipment with automated moving parts.
