We’re hiring a VP of Marketing at Unusual Ventures, who will lead a full-stack marketing team as we partner with incredible founders to solve their most critical company-building challenges. This person will help amplify the most important aspects of Unusual, building on the strong foundation we’ve established and leading the firm to new heights.
As the VP of Marketing, your mission will be to ensure that the most talented, driven builders in enterprise technology know about Unusual Ventures and the value we bring to founders at the earliest stages of their journey.
I certainly appreciate that a marketing leadership role at a VC firm can seem less exciting or creative than other opportunities. But we named the firm Unusual for specific reasons and want a thoughtful and inspiring content marketer to work with our entire team. Trust me when I say that this is an unusual marketing job. To borrow from Ernest Shackleton:
Marketer wanted for hazardous journey. Excellent wages, stiff competition, long hours, passionate team. Obvious path to success is doubtful. Honor and recognition in the event of success.
We are a team of passionate nerds who have spent the past 7 years writing and delivering high quality content for founders. We have dozens of Founders we worked closely with as they’ve made the journey from initial idea through product market fit and beyond the founder led selling phase. We’ve created proprietary programs like Unusual Academy and developed custom resources specifically tailored to the unique needs of early-stage startups, which have reached hundreds of thousands of Founders and operators.
Here’s what we are looking for:
- You have deep empathy for Founders. You love startups. You love learning about them and hearing the adventures of Founders.
- You are passionate and want to build. You aren’t just looking for a role where you do more of what’s already happening. You see marketing as an opportunity to inspire and have a history of crafting narratives and playbooks.
- You are creative, daring and are not afraid to try new things. You’ve built comprehensive marketing operations before, and you thrive on using data to refine and optimize for impact. You’re excited about turning disparate activities into a cohesive machine.
- You have deep content marketing expertise. While you have depth in specific areas—like growth or product marketing—you understand and appreciate the how important a single image or message can be.
- You lead by example. You’ve effectively managed teams, but you’re equally excited to dive into the work yourself. You’re hands-on, collaborative, and low ego, with strong instincts for both strategy and execution.
- You aspire to excellence. You’ve been gritty and passionate about things all your life and you want to work with a team that has very high standards and will push you to learn and grow.
- You’re action-oriented and intense. Speed and results are critical to you, and you’re not content with slowness or complacency. You set a fast pace and expect the same from your team.
- You believe in craftsmanship. You have high standards for quality, with a trained eye and a refined sense of what makes a brand stand out in a crowded market.
Must haves:
- You have experience as the lead content marketer for a successful startup or new product.
- You have an appreciation for Founders and are a student of the venture capital industry.
- You are willing to be in the office 5 days a week in Menlo Park
