Requirements
  • An associate degree in a science-related field, completion of a dosimetry training program, or a bachelor's or master's degree in dosimetry or a certificate in degree is required.
  • Certification by the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board, or eligibility for certification, is required.
  • Two years of full-time relevant work experience or completion of a clinical dosimetry training program in Radiation Therapy is required.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, clinical oncology, radiobiology, radiation physics, and radiation safety is required.
  • Expertise in the technical aspects of radiation oncology and medical physics is required to develop optimal treatment plans.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use linear accelerator equipment is required.
  • Proficiency in image registration using computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography datasets is required.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are required.
Responsibilities
  • Design radiation treatment plans using three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, volumetric modulated arc therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and stereotactic body radiation therapy with optimal beam geometry to deliver the prescribed radiation dose.
  • Identify and contour normal and dose-limiting structures using images from one or more datasets.
  • Create and transfer reference images and localization markers for portal verification and treatment delivery.
  • Perform simulations and tumor localization using specified imaging devices.
  • Plan and implement the fabrication of compensation filters, custom shields, wedges, and other beam-modifying devices.
  • Plan and implement the production of molds, casts, and other immobilization devices.
  • Advise the radiation oncology team on treatment plan implementation, including the correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangements, and other treatment or imaging parameters.
  • Perform calculations for accurate delivery of the prescribed dose, document pertinent information in the patient record, and verify the mathematical accuracy of calculations using an approved method.
  • Assist and provide technical support to the medical physicist with radiation safety and protection, qualitative machine calibrations, and quality assurance of treatment plans and radiation oncology equipment.
  • Operate treatment-planning computers and perform quality assurance under the direction of the medical physicist.
  • Assist with receiving, loading, and shipping radioactive materials.
