  • A high school diploma plus culinary education and training of one academic year is required.
  • Food Safe Certification is required.
  • Standard First Aid, CPR, and AED certification is required.
  • Up to one year of experience working in a busy kitchen, food preparation, and service environment is required.
  • The employee must support The Salvation Army’s mission and purpose as related to the position responsibilities.
  • The employee must comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • The employee must obtain clearance through internal Salvation Army child and youth abuse prevention protocols.
  • Proficiency in basic cooking techniques and knowledge of food preparation methods are required.
  • The employee must understand dietary needs and restrictions, including gluten-free, vegan, vegetarian, and allergen-free requirements, and be able to prepare meals accordingly.
  • Knowledge and application of food safety standards and sanitation regulations are required.
  • The employee must be able to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Strong verbal communication skills are required to coordinate with team members and interact with diverse groups of people.
  • The employee must adapt to changing circumstances in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
  • The employee must manage time efficiently so meal preparation, cleaning, and other duties are completed promptly.
  • Attention to detail is required for food preparation, cleaning, and safety protocols.
  • The employee must be able to troubleshoot issues arising during meal preparation or service.
  • Good physical stamina is required for prolonged standing and lifting heavy kitchen items.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with meal preparation, including salads, desserts, and other preparation work as directed by the Cook or Food Services Manager.
  • Prepare meals according to specific dietary requirements and restrictions.
  • Support the Cook as necessary to ensure consistent, quality food preparation.
  • Receive and properly store food shipments and deliveries.
  • Conduct routine inventory checks of dry goods, refrigeration, and freezer storage units.
  • Store leftover food after meals using correct labeling and dating procedures to maintain food safety.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of the kitchen, food supply areas, staff kitchen, and dry goods room.
  • Perform end-of-week deep cleaning tasks.
  • Soak cooking and preparation dishes after use for thorough cleaning.
  • Store cleaned and dried pots and pans in designated locations.
  • Assist with serving meals to ensure a smooth dining experience.
  • Lift and transport heavy food items from ovens and storage areas.
  • Record meals served for rental groups with the Cook.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Food Services Manager.
  • Maintain personal cleanliness, wash hands, and use required personal protective equipment such as gloves and aprons.
  • Follow safe food handling procedures for storage, preparation, and cooking to prevent cross-contamination and foodborne illnesses.
  • Operate kitchen equipment safely and responsibly according to usage guidelines.
  • Follow hazard communication protocols, including correct use and storage of cleaning chemicals and identification of potential allergens.
  • Use proper lifting and carrying techniques for heavy items.
  • Receive and stock food and kitchen supply orders.
  • Use and safeguard purchased food, donations, and organizational assets according to established guidelines.
