Requirements
  • A minimum College Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related field is required.
  • A valid driver's license and reliable vehicle are required.
  • A valid passport and ability to travel in North America as needed, less than 10%, are required.
  • At least 10 years of related experience as a Mechanical Engineer, Mechanical Designer, or in a related position is required.
  • Exceptional skills using SolidWorks PDM Professional in an industrial manufacturing environment are required.
  • Proficiency in system integration of electromechanical equipment and conveyors is required.
  • Proven experience in a Lean manufacturing environment, including methods and process improvement programs, is required.
  • Proficiency with ERP Syteline CSI, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft 365 applications including Co-Pilot, Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and Smartsheet is required.
  • Previous design experience applying Finite Element Analysis and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing is required.
  • Project, task, and staff management skills are required.
  • The ability to set priorities, develop work schedules, monitor progress toward goals, and track relevant details and data is required.
  • The ability to assess problem situations, identify causes, process relevant information, generate solutions, and make recommendations or resolve problems is required.
  • The ability to navigate a team of technical professionals involved in multiple projects is required.

  • The role requires working in an office and manufacturing facility, usually for a standard 40-hour work week, with occasional overtime as needed.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee the activities of Applications Engineering designers focused on integration and custom solutions, ensuring adherence to project specifications, plans, and timelines.
  • Develop and implement plans to build critical design skills and related resources for sustained productivity and future product viability.
  • Conceptualize, develop, implement, and maintain product designs using electromechanical engineering principles and practices.
  • Analyze specifications and business, technology, and cost requirements, and implement approved designs in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Ensure product reliability, performance, and customer acceptance.
  • Complete designs and drawings using three-dimensional and/or two-dimensional design software for the manufacture of mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, development, and management for Applications Engineering staff.
  • Oversee department design work using the enterprise resource planning system, build specifications, drawings, bills of material, general arrangement drawings, custom mechanical and electrical features, and commissioning check sheets.
  • Plan, prioritize, manage, allocate, and track the department workload and resources.
  • Develop, document, implement, and enforce group processes and procedures.
  • Manage project plans and workload to achieve timelines and milestones, and address issues as they arise.
  • Establish, track, and publish departmental metrics and take steps to achieve goals.
  • Conceptualize and develop products using mechanical engineering principles.
  • Develop and maintain cost projections against established targets throughout product development.
  • Ensure product quality through functional, accelerated life, and abusive testing.
  • Provide quality assurance for group output.
  • Address acute product issues and requests for support.
  • Lead and support cost-reduction initiatives.
  • Drive focused innovation and experimentation.
  • Participate in engineering projects as requested by the Engineering Manager.
  • Train Applications Engineering designers.
  • Independently develop workable design concepts.
  • Check designs for errors that could cause rework.
  • Document project or job changes and ensure proper documentation.
  • Recommend products, designs, and materials for cost improvement.
  • Liaise with manufacturing to ensure designs are executed correctly and within timelines.
  • Collaborate with purchasing to support supply-chain sourcing and provide technical support for deviations.
  • Provide technical support for shop production.
  • Assist in developing specifications for new products and product enhancements.
  • Support vendors in component fabrication.
  • Manage required materials.
  • List and implement project tasks.
  • Serve as a technical resource to other departments.
  • Oversee designers' day-to-day workload and productivity.
  • Create and maintain project plans, task listings, and timelines.
  • Establish employee development programs.
  • Develop and maintain an approved three- to five-year staffing plan and appropriate staffing levels.
  • Develop and maintain supporting design calculations.
  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of computer-aided design product models and layouts in SolidWorks.
  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of computer-aided design product detail drawings in AutoCAD.
  • Oversee Finite Element Analysis of SolidWorks models.
  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of product bills of material and routings in the enterprise resource planning system.
  • Manage engineering change notices.
  • Generate product manuals when required.
  • Create and manage design standards and direct designs to meet project objectives.
  • Control design and build targets related to customer requirements.
  • Attend project kickoff meetings, site visits, department meetings, and project debrief meetings.
  • Collaborate with the installation team and respond to questions and problems before and during project installation.
  • Conduct periodic group meetings and huddles.
  • Conduct periodic and annual performance reviews.
  • Respond to management prioritization of product design enhancements.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering is an asset.
  • SolidWorks training courses are an asset.
  • A Professional Engineer designation is an asset.
  • AutoCAD certification is preferred.
