Requirements
  • At least 3 years of experience performing mechanical inspections for building construction.
  • Thorough knowledge of materials and methods used in plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration installations.
  • Current International Code Council certification as a Commercial Mechanical Inspector.
  • Proof of Cal-OSHA 30-hour training completed within the last 4 years.
  • Fall protection and harness training.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of project management information software used for inspection and document control, including Microsoft Office, Outlook, Excel, Word, PMWeb, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and Bluebeam.
  • Computer proficiency to review and use electronic contract documents, change orders, submittals, requests for information, and other inspection documents with minimal supervision.
  • Must possess a LAWA SIDA badge before the official start.
  • Must provide proof of residency in Southern California.
  • Must be able to work assigned day, swing, or night shifts and modified schedules including nights and weekends as required by contractor activities.
Responsibilities
  • Inspect construction of airport improvements and utility projects for conformance with plans, specifications, contracts, permits, environmental documents, and work agreements.
  • Conduct daily inspections of mechanical and plumbing systems across building and terminal construction projects.
  • Review and interpret construction documents, including blueprints, shop drawings, submittals, requests for information, and change orders.
  • Prepare comprehensive daily inspection reports documenting observed construction activities, progress, deficiencies, and safety concerns.
  • Verify contractor compliance with local and national mechanical and plumbing codes and LAWA-specific standards.
  • Track and document time-and-material work, field changes, and job quantities.
  • Assist in validating contractor progress payment requests against an approved schedule of values.
  • Support special inspections and testing activities while coordinating with engineers, contractors, and third-party agencies.
  • Inspect domestic water and sewage systems; venting, fire sprinklers, and gas piping; HVAC systems including air handlers, chillers, boilers, and ductwork; smoke control systems; mechanical ventilation and exhaust; fire and life safety integration; mechanical and plumbing shutdowns and lockout/tagout procedures; commissioning and balancing reports; underground utilities; and fire and life safety systems including smoke/heat detectors and FM-200 suppression systems.
Desired Qualifications
  • Additional current International Code Council certification as a Commercial Plumbing Inspector.
  • NFPA 70E standards training completed within the last 3 years.
  • Plumbing experience at journeyman or master level with progression into inspection.
  • Experience inspecting mechanical systems in large-scale commercial, industrial, or public buildings.
  • Confined Space Entry Training.
  • Experience overseeing and ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations on significant construction projects.
  • Experience coordinating complex projects with contractors, engineers, city officials, and other stakeholders.
  • Expertise in identifying and addressing deficiencies to ensure construction meets required standards.
  • Strong understanding of diverse code requirements, including the California Building Code and California Mechanical Code.
  • Excellent communication and time management skills.
  • Availability to work overtime as required to meet project deadlines.
