Requirements
  • The candidate must have an MSc in optical engineering, physics, or a related field; a PhD is preferred.
  • The candidate must have hands-on experience with advanced optical systems, including alignment and characterisation of complex microscopy or spectroscopy setups and pulsed laser systems.
  • The candidate must have strong programming skills in one or more of LabView, Python, Matlab, or similar.
  • The candidate must be proficient in CAD software for designing optomechanical components.
  • The candidate must have excellent organisational skills and be able to manage multiple tasks independently and reliably.
  • The candidate must have a pragmatic, hands-on mindset focused on finding practical solutions and getting things to work.
  • The candidate must be fluent in English and have strong communication and presentation skills.
Responsibilities
  • Design mechanical, optical, and electronic components of custom light microscopes for three-dimensional imaging inside scattering biological tissue.
  • Construct, align, and adapt custom microscopy setups for specific life science applications and imaging conditions.
  • Develop and maintain hardware control and data acquisition software, including automation of imaging workflows and post-processing pipelines.
  • Maintain and develop the group’s codebase and GitHub repositories, and provide cluster computing support for large-scale data analysis.
  • Program and customise computational data analysis packages, including three-dimensional visualisation and quantitative analysis of imaging data.
  • Design custom optomechanical components for microscope construction and sample interfacing using CAD.
  • Collaborate with biologists and EMBL instrumentation workshops to ensure microscope practicality and usability, including custom sample mounts and environmental control.
  • Maintain a continuous technology watch to keep the group’s microscopes at a cutting-edge hardware and software level.
  • Train and provide technical assistance to students and postdoctoral fellows in the group.
  • Represent the lab in the Cell Biology and Biophysics Unit’s lab manager network, participate in joint weekly meetings, and contribute to cross-unit technical coordination.
  • Organise the laboratory, including ordering supplies and equipment, maintaining databases, and overseeing laser and chemical safety protocols.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with computational optics, image analysis, or large-scale data processing on compute clusters.
  • Familiarity with laser, biological, and chemical safety regulations in a research laboratory environment.
  • Prior experience with biological sample preparation and handling.
  • Experience supervising students or junior researchers in a technical setting.
  • A keen interest in the biological and neuroscientific applications of novel optical technologies.

Boehringer Ingelheim Stiftung funds EMBL €7M

Boehringer Ingelheim Stiftung has committed €7 million to support the EMBL Imaging Centre in Heidelberg, enhancing its development of cutting-edge imaging technologies. This is the second funding round from BIS, following an initial €5 million in 2017. The funding will help recruit and maintain highly qualified staff, furthering the centre's role as a leading international hub for advanced microscopy technologies and training, having supported over 290 projects from 27 countries since mid-2021.
