Requirements
  • At least five years of instructor experience.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant physical fitness training experience.
  • A current CPR certification, or the ability to attain one.
  • A Certified Personal Trainer certification from a third-party accreditor recognized by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, or the ability to attain one.
  • Certification as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, or as a Strength & Conditioning Coach Certified through the Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association.
  • At least five years of demonstrable accumulated experience developing long- and short-range planning and coordinating sport- or mission-specific performance programs with individual and group athletes in collegiate, Olympic, professional, or tactical settings.
  • Expert knowledge of physical fitness, functional fitness, basic nutrition, injury prevention, and sports medicine care.
  • The ability to immediately analyze, predict, and prevent situations to ensure safe training.
  • The ability to establish and maintain liaison with personnel at all levels to plan and coordinate assigned responsibilities.
  • Skill in oral and written communication to present training to varied audiences.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles, course development, classroom and practical instructional presentation methods, and methods for evaluating training effectiveness.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of advanced physical readiness methods for providing basic and advanced training.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • The ability to work indoors and outdoors in extreme hot and cold conditions, including regular physical and mental exertion, prolonged standing and walking, periodic heavy lifting, and irregular hours.
  • The ability to complete pre-employment and random drug screening.
Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, and provide basic and advanced fitness instruction and related physical readiness training for domestic and overseas programs in indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Administer Department of State fitness programs in accordance with Department of State standards and policies.
  • Perform Training Safety Officer and role-player controller duties in supported tasks.
  • Review training objectives, lesson plans, materials, and instructional methods before assigned courses begin.
  • Comply with Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation standards.
  • Research current industry fitness standards related to the Department of State mission and introduce applicable information.
  • Resolve problems arising during preparation for and delivery of training.
  • Evaluate training effectiveness against established objectives.
  • Review and analyze trainee evaluations, instructor feedback, and personal observations.
  • Identify and recommend revisions to course content, materials, and instructional methods to improve curriculum effectiveness and quality.
  • Evaluate the effects of planned or projected changes in Department of State physical readiness programs on existing training content, materials, and methods.
  • Recommend minor course updates or a complete curriculum review to the Physical Readiness Program Manager.
  • Provide budget estimates for assigned courses and monitor fund expenditures for efficient resource use.
  • Participate in curriculum review conferences as a subject matter expert in physical fitness/readiness, injury prevention, and instructional coaching techniques.
  • Assist instructors with other physical readiness subjects and practical exercises.
  • Present physical readiness and fitness briefings to audiences including senior officials.
  • Establish and maintain liaison with law enforcement, security, military, government, and civilian organizations concerning physical fitness/readiness, emergency medical care, injury prevention, and instructional coaching.
  • Maintain proficiency in current physical fitness techniques, methods, and procedures through training sessions, seminars, and workshops.
  • Assist with scheduling and planning classes in coordination with program coordinators and other training entities.
  • Assign instructors and test proctors as needed for training sessions.
  • Ensure training complies with current legal and liability restrictions.
  • Submit training records and record physical readiness test scores in the DSET QUALS database in a timely manner.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for new training design and test and evaluate new training courses and instructional materials.
  • Assist with equipment inventory and maintenance for assigned training programs.
  • Maintain Department of State Readiness Program global mailboxes for recording scores, scheduling tests, and responding to program questions.
  • Assist with communication and scheduling for pre-hire physical readiness testing with Human Resources, field offices, and overseas posts.
  • Provide fitness center orientations for fitness centers under the Training Directorate.
  • Maintain fitness center liability waiver records and the Fitness Library Resource Database.
Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with law enforcement or military fitness training and testing methods.
  • A high school diploma, bachelor's degree, or associate degree in a fitness career field.
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in exercise science, health science, or a physical education-related discipline.
