Requirements
- Graduation from an approved school of nursing.
- One year of experience is required unless approved by an AVP-level leader or above.
- A current State of Alabama registered nurse license or valid enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact multistate registered nurse license is required.
- Current Basic Life Support/Healthcare Provider certification is required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation Program, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Trauma Nursing Core Course certifications are required for certain areas; Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification is required for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Responsibilities
- Utilize ambulatory care nursing knowledge and competencies to promote wellness, restore health, address health-related problems, and support end-of-life care.
- Assess patients and develop individualized plans of care using evidence-based ambulatory care nursing practice.
- Provide age-appropriate patient care and interpret age-specific patient needs.
- Prescribe, delegate, coordinate, and document patient care, including assessment, education, medication administration, treatments, and patient safety.
- Demonstrate competency in nursing skills and use of patient-care and unit equipment.
- Prioritize patient care according to evidence-based standards of care.
- Identify and resolve problems effectively.
- Delegate tasks to healthcare team members according to patient needs and team member capabilities and qualifications.
- Communicate patient-condition and unit-concern information to healthcare team members.
- Maintain a safe and caring environment for patients and families.
- Integrate patient and family education into care delivery.
- Participate in assigned process-improvement activities.
- Comply with legal requirements, patient rights, and regulatory and accrediting standards.
- Maintain punctual attendance and compliance with Baptist Health policies and applicable federal, state, and local standards.
- Provide daily staffing for extracorporeal life support services when trained as an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Specialist.
- Work under unit leadership, intensivist services, and perfusion services to support adequate perfusion, acid-base balance, and hemodynamic stability for patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.
- Interpret, adjust, and complete treatment-specific care for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation patients in collaboration with physicians, perfusionists, and healthcare team members.
- Perform technical extracorporeal membrane oxygenation skills safely and efficiently, including troubleshooting crises and emergency situations.
- Perform scheduled, unscheduled, and emergency extracorporeal life support in the hospital setting.
- Operate extracorporeal membrane oxygenation equipment under physician and perfusion-provider direction.
- Monitor and optimize the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation circuit and related equipment.
- Administer ordered blood products and medications through the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation circuit.
- Manage equipment connected in line with the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation circuit.
- Manage extracorporeal life support during transport and ensure continuous extracorporeal life support coverage.
- Attend mandatory quarterly simulations.
- Contribute to the knowledge and skills of others and to continuous improvement in healthcare quality and organizational outcomes.
- Participate in or lead unit-level and organizational nursing-practice and performance-improvement committees.
- Participate in department and organizational peer review, mentoring, and coaching related to professional practice or role performance.
- Use supplies efficiently and maintain a clean, safe, and organized unit.
- Provide input into staff development, hospital and nursing committees, nursing research, and performance-management activities.
- Maintain professional development and continuing education.
- Maintain extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and perfusion-service equipment and supplies and provide pertinent information to supervisors, biomedical personnel, or vendors.
- Provide critical nursing resource support to the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit or other areas as directed when not providing extracorporeal life support services.
- Perform other assigned duties.
