New Scottish coding and AI hubs to address 'unacceptable postcode lottery'

New Scottish coding and AI hubs to address 'unacceptable postcode lottery' By Scott Reid Published 25th Aug 2026, 06:01 BST "Access to grassroots computing initiatives in Scotland is often a postcode lottery with varying coverage and support" - Kraig Brown, Digital Xtra. A charity dedicated to boosting the provision of extracurricular computing activities for young people in Scotland is looking to set up a national network of community coding and AI hubs. Over the past ten years, Digital Xtra has supported more than 200 grassroots activities by awarding some £1.1 million via its annual grants programme. These initiatives have engaged more than 60,000 young people while laying a foundation for ongoing engagement about computing and technology. The charity is now looking to turbocharge those figures under its new "Code Xtra" strategy. It will see several new community coding and artificial intelligence (AI) hubs rolled out across Scotland as the organisation focuses on more of a "place-based" approach rather than funding individual projects. You May Like In turn, these community hubs will directly support the growth of grassroots computing clubs in their local areas. With Scottish government support, the first phase of the project will see hubs based in North Edinburgh (Muirhouse Library), Midlothian (Dalkeith Library), Inverclyde (Creative Regeneration) and Moray (Elgin Library), with more scheduled to be confirmed elsewhere in the country later this year. Digital Xtra will then continue working with the government and its industry partners, including Skyscanner, Baillie Gifford and Cirrus Logic, to extend the hub network. Kraig Brown, Digital Xtra's partnerships and development manager, said: "Technology is evolving faster than ever, and extracurricular tech activities are no longer just 'nice-to-have' - they are now a key part of young people's learning journey. When assessment and accreditation aren't the primary focus, young people have the freedom to think creatively, naturally building their 'STEM Capital'. "They are also a proven way to reach young people who often disengage in a traditional classroom setting and can be delivered in various locations or times that work for young people, their families, and the wider community. "However, access to grassroots computing initiatives in Scotland is often a postcode lottery with varying coverage and support. This is unacceptable. "Digital Xtra will continue to champion extracurricular computing initiatives for young people through our new community coding and AI hubs network, which will create a more joined-up approach to informal digital learning." Each hub will drive growth by focusing on three aspects - delivery, training and resources. They aim to act as a lending library with equipment and resources for local schools and community groups. The hubs will feature Lego Education's new, curriculum-aligned computing science and AI kits which teach "age-appropriate lessons" about foundational coding and machine learning. Digital Xtra is understood to be one of the first organisations in Scotland to make this kit available to the public, while also introducing machine learning and AI skills to the charity's remit for the first time. Ongoing training and support will be provided by Digital Xtra, Raising Robots, and Raspberry Pi Foundation as well as Digital Xtra's other education and industry partners. Minister for business Tom Arthur said: "Digital skills are essential for Scotland's future, and every young person should have the opportunity to develop them, regardless of where they live, which is why I am proud to support this initiative."

Hadrian valued at nearly $8 billion after fresh funding as money pours into defense tech. Published Thu, Aug 6 20265:54 AM EDT Updated Thu, Aug 6 202610:07 AM EDT Key Points * Hadrian raised nearly $1.4 billion in new funding at a $7.9 billion valuation. * Defense tech startups are benefiting from President Donald Trump's plan to upgrade the U.S. military. * Hadrian CEO Chris Power said the fresh funds will allow it to invest in its workforce and its Opus software platform. Riding a wave of enthusiasm for defense tech, manufacturing startup Hadrian said on Thursday that it has closed its latest round of funding at a $7.9 billion valuation, more than quadruple where investors valued the company in January. Hadrian, which builds advanced factories for defense and aerospace companies and agencies, raised nearly $1.4 billion in a round led by Baillie Gifford, J.P. Morgan Strategic Investment Group, and a number of others, including Washington Harbour Partners. "It enables us to make massive investments to scale our workforce, our software platform Opus that powers our factories, and frankly, get ahead of the massive amounts of production challenges the country has in areas like submarines, munitions, the drone industrial base," CEO Chris Power told CNBC's Morgan Brennan on "Morning Call" on Thursday. Power said the company's Opus software is being used by the Army and Navy, and the company will be announcing other defense primes soon. "With physical AI sweeping the physical economy, which is 100 times larger than the digital economy, everyone's going to need to rebase their software to adapt and compete in this new world," Power told CNBC. Hadrian is the latest in a series of high-profile defense funding rounds, fueled by President Donald Trump's push to reindustrialize the U.S. military and scale a robust manufacturing base. Trump is seeking to spend an unprecedented $1.5 trillion on defense as geopolitical tensions heighten the need for new weapons and spur calls to reduce U.S dependence on expensive missile systems. Shield AI, whose technology powers drones, raised money in March at a $12.7 billion valuation, and that month autonomous ship maker Saronic, whose technology was used in Iran, was valued at $9.25 billion in a new funding round. Anduril doubled its valuation two months later to over $60 billion. Last year, Hadrian raised $260 million, with funding from Peter Thiel's Founders Fund, to build a new factory and bolster naval defense capabilities. Hadrian raises $1.37B to scale defense manufacturing as US production demands surge

Hadrian, a defense manufacturer and factory builder, has raised $1.37 billion in Series D funding, valuing the company just below $8 billion. The round was led by JPMorganChase's Strategic Investment Group, with participation from WCM Investment Management, Washington Harbour Partners, Valor Equity Partners, 137 Ventures, and Baillie Gifford. The company produces precision parts and offers factories-as-a-service for aerospace and defense markets, using AI, automation, and robotics alongside skilled workers. Hadrian operates nearly 3 million square feet across four sites. Chief executive Chris Power told Axios the funding reflects growing recognition of domestic manufacturing's importance. Hadrian supplies major defense contractors including Lockheed Martin and RTX, and will mass-produce submarine components for the US Navy in Alabama.
