Requirements
  • Degree or Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, Construction Management, or a related field
  • 10+ years of proven experience as a Construction Safety Manager or a similar role in industrial, infrastructure, hydro, logistics, and commercial real estate projects
  • In-depth knowledge of construction safety regulations and best practices.
  • Strong leadership, mentorship, and communication skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in using safety management software and tools
  • Ability to deal with several stakeholders, including clients, GCs, subtrades, MOL inspectors etc
Responsibilities
  • Identify new clients and projects through professional networks, bid portals, trade shows, and communications with existing client contacts; log onto bidding sites bi-weekly; filter projects; acquire and follow up marketing materials; attend trade shows; record and follow up with leads.
  • Manage client relationships by supporting and leading Fortune 500 clients.
  • Hire safety personnel by overseeing workforce on sites and leading scheduling across projects; understand project personnel requirements; monitor vacation requests; create and update schedule spreadsheets; move employees among projects; send resumes to client for sign-off before personnel go on site; lead audit and quality of work from employees.
  • Oversee quality of safety services by attending job sites; understand project-specific safety issues across industries and services; call employees to inquire actions being taken on site.
  • Negotiate estimates based on scope by working directly with clients on negotiating rates and managing profit margins.
  • Set up new jobs to meet client needs by speaking to project managers to understand scope; identify people in charge on each project; walk employees through what is happening on site; communicate special circumstances, policies and preferences for each client.
  • Manage and coach junior employees by connecting with them regularly; bi-weekly meetings; discuss career prospects and growth; recommend training and learning opportunities; take employees to lunch to develop culture and rapport; reprimand and discipline as needed.
  • Serve as go-to contact for employee questions on safety/client requests by recommending actions when ambiguity exists; determine if client requests can be met; understand the scope of services and roster capabilities to accept or decline unique requests.
  • Occasionally cover shifts at various sites when key safety personnel are unavailable.
  • Manage personnel changes on existing sites by monitoring performance; speak with project managers and other employees for feedback; attend site to check quality and determine if employees are meeting expectations; ensure forms are filled correctly; ensure equipment setup, job board, PPE compliance; anticipate pipeline of work requiring moves across sites.
  • Deal with 911 calls and issues by answering the phone 24/7 and handling issues.
Desired Qualifications
  • CRSP, NCSO or equivalent a strong asset
  • Third party construction safety experience a valuable asset
